R&B singer Monifah recently spoke out about dating women in an interview with Essence.com. Though Monifah once dated ex-lover Queen Latifah for many years, she still can’t bring herself to admit she’s out of the closet.
“I hate the term,” she says, “because I’ve never been anything but who I am, and I’ve lived my authentic life.”
Monifah, 41, is one of 5 R&B singers featured in a new reality TV series titled “R&B Divas,” premiering Aug. 20 on TVOne. The series also stars Faith Evans, Nicci Gilbert, Kiki Wyatt, and Sylena Johnson. The series centers around the women’s lives as they work together on a R&B compilation album.
In the trailer for the show, we see Monifah kissing her butch lover. Monifah then asks her teenage daughter if she supports her lesbian relationship, but the teen tells Monifah she does not support her lesbian lifestyle.
Here’s a little background: rumor has it that Monifah was involved in a longterm, abusive relationship with Teresa Weatherspoon, 46, a retired WNBA player who now coaches the Louisiana Tech Lady Techsters basketball team. Weatherspoon allegedly dispensed regular beat downs whenever Monifah got out of line. Word is that the police were called to their home numerous times to break up fights.
If the rumors are true, it’s easy to understand why Monifah’s daughter isn’t down with her lesbian lifestyle. Monifah seems to be attracted to aggressive lesbians who might abuse her. The teen is probably traumatized from all the violence she witnessed growing up.
It will be interesting to see if Monifah mentions Queen Latifah (or Weatherspoon) at all during the series. They follow each other on Twitter.com, so they have remained cordial to one another after the break up.
