A Sports Illustrated reporter tracked down a few of Jovan Belcher’s last text messages before he shot and killed his girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself.
On Thanksgiving night Belcher, 25, exchanged text messages with Reggie Paramoure, who played on the football team with Belcher at the University of Maine.
In the text messages, the Kansas City Chief’s linebacker called his newborn daughter a “blessing”, criticized his team’s offense and complained about relationship problems with his girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, 22.
“I see yall boys aint doing too well. Whats goen on wit u besides ball,” Paramoure wrote.
“Yea man,” Belcher texted back. “our ‘O’ can’t even put 7 in the board for us, but everything good bro, baby momma crazy but I have a little girl almost 3 month man and she’s a blessing, she makes me smile on the worst day.”
Paramoure responded by advising Belcher to have a gun ready for when she grows up and starts dating boys.
“Yea man,” Belcher replied. “I got about 8 guns now, from hand Gunz to assault rifles for her little bf’s.”
Belcher used 2 of those guns to murder Perkins and commit suicide on Saturday.
