MC Hammer took to his Twitter account last night to blast police for what he called a racial profiling incident.
Hammer, whose real name is Stanley Kirk Burrell, 50, tweeted about his encounter with an overweight officer at a mall in Dublin, California, about 348 miles north of Los Angeles.
Hammer tweeted that he was on his way to San Quentin prison Friday morning to “congratulate a group of inmates”, when the car he was driving was pulled over by Dublin, CA police.
Hammer said an officer tapped on his window and asked him if he was “on parole or probation.” After exchanging words, the cop allegedly reached into Hammer’s car and tried to snatch him out of the car. Hammer laughed at the officer’s attempts to take him into custody — which made the cop even angrier.
“It was comical to me until he pulled out his guns, blew his whistle and yelled for help (MallCop) !!! But make no mistake he’s dangerous,” Hammer tweeted.
Hammer was booked into the Santa Rita jail and released on the same day.
Hammer expressed concern over being given a Tuberculin (PPD) skin test for the sometimes deadly respiratory infection Tuberculosis. He was right to express concern over the test especially since police didn’t know if he was allergic to the test or not.
Tuberculin skin tests are usually administered to prisoners within prison populations — not to those who are arrested during traffic stops and are not going to be held for more than a few hours.
The test, which is administered via injection just under the skin, takes over 48 to 72 hours to read — which makes no sense if the prisoner is going to be released out on the streets after a few hours.
“Instead of being bitter, I’m taking the opportunity to make this a ‘teachable moment’ and ‘eye opener’ for my many friends & colleagues,” Hammer tweeted.
Hammer is best known for a string of R&B dance hits in the 1980s and ’90s, including “Let’s Get It Started” (1988); “Please Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em” (1990); and “Too Legit to Quit” (1991).
