Miami Heat star Dwayne Wade has released an official response to his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches’s sit-in protest on the streets of Chicago.
During her protest on Friday, July 19, Funches appeared to sleep on the sidewalk outside a Chicago courthouse while a friend hovered over her with a homemade sign that implied Funches was homeless.
In a video uploaded to YouTube, Funches complained that Wade withheld funds from her that should have been deposited in a joint bank account. She also said Wade, who was granted full custody of their 2 sons in 2011, was deliberately keeping the children from her.
In a statement released Monday, Wade’s attorney, James B. Pritikin, disputed Funches-Wade’s claims that she was destitute. He said Wade agreed to pay Funches $5 million in a divorce settlement.
“Mr. Wade has provided a very generous settlement to Ms. Funches to continue to live a wonderful lifestyle for the rest of her life,” Pritikin wrote.
Pritikin added: “Dwyane Wade has made several requests over the years to settle this matter, despite Ms. Funches having 16 different attorneys and 2 arrests throughout this process.”
But if Wade was sympathetic to Funches, he had a strange way of showing it.
Wade took to his Instagram account on Friday and wrote “#REALLY #whatyoutalkingaboutwillis #aintnobodygottimeforthat.”
He was immediately attacked by his female Instagram followers for his apparent insensitivity. Wade followed up his post 2 days later, writing: “I had my headphones on.. Did y’all hear something????..#stopit #dontbefooled #storiessellpapers #movingon”
Pritikin’s full statement is below:
“Dwyane Wade and his ex-wife Siohvaughn Funches have reached a financial settlement. The agreement was submitted in court last Tuesday, July 16 prior to Ms. Funches’ recent unfounded and erratic public display outside the courthouse this past Friday. Dwyane Wade has made several requests over the years to settle this matter, despite Ms. Funches having 16 different attorneys and 2 arrests throughout this process. Mr. Wade has provided a very generous settlement to Ms. Funches to continue to live a wonderful lifestyle for the rest of her life.
Despite false allegations by Ms. Funches claiming to be “homeless” and “destitute,” Dwyane Wade has maintained over the years financial support to his ex-wife by providing her with income over $25,000 on a monthly basis, timely paid for her home mortgage, maintenance and security at the house, 4 cars, insurance, taxes and all of her attorney fees throughout this process. Ms. Funches has made a mockery of homelessness which is a serious and personal issue for Mr. Wade as his mother was homeless for a period of time when he was a child.
Dwyane Wade was awarded sole custody of their sons by the court in 2011. The safety and wellbeing of his children are his main priority. Due to Ms. Funches’ current unstable mental state, her visitation will be determined by the court. Mr. Wade continues to hope that one day he will have a civil relationship with his ex-wife for the sake of their sons.”

I watched the video and read some of her interviews in the past, she was about to be homeless because the house he was paying for – per the agreement, he stopped making payments and the house was about to go into foreclosure! I feel sorry for this woman. I really do. She has done many many things that make it clear that she has severe mental health issues. She’s really lucky she has Dwayne’s money to live off of instead of having to settle for a county check.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I feel sorry for her. On the other, I’m like maybe it’s time to accept some responsibility and stop making yourself look like a fool. Unfortunately these men don’t care about the kind of pain that they cause when they decide that the one who’s been there all along, isn’t good enough anymore once they’ve found something “better”. I just can’t stand to see her letting him see just how badly he’s destroyed her life. He’ll never care. Not that he’s a bad guy but clearly he’s moved on. And she may be about the drama but still no reason to put herself out there like this. I say get it together, seek counseling, go back to school, learn a trade, for Christ sake do something to regain your dignity, other than wait for him to admit he was wrong or cut you a damn check.
