Headlines about Robin Thicke get stranger by the day, and the latest news is no exception.

You may have heard about the copyright infringement claims against Thicke and producer Pharrell Williams for their smash “Blurred Lines.” Last fall, Marvin Gaye’s family filed suit, saying that the song rips off Gaye’s 1977 hit “Got to Give It Up” — this was after Thicke and Williams filed a preemptive suit claiming no infringement.

It’s a convoluted case that just got more confusing: On Monday, the Hollywood Reporter managed to get Thicke’s deposition for the case, and the documents are jaw-dropping.

The biggest reveal arrives as Thicke says he couldn’t have possibly copied Gaye’s song. The defense? Because he was “high on Vicodin and alcohol” in the studio the day it was written. Oh, and Williams actually wrote most of it, he said.

Okay … so, the attorney asked, why did Thicke say that it was a co-writing effort? Such as in an interview with GQ, in a particularly noteworthy passage, where Thicke was quoted as saying: “Pharrell and I were in the studio and I told him that one of my favorite songs of all time was Marvin Gaye’s ‘Got to Give It Up.’ I was like, ‘Damn, we should make something like that, something with that groove.’ Then he started playing a little something and we literally wrote the song in about a half hour and recorded it.”

Thicke has an explanation for that, too: It was all a lie. Why did he lie about co-writing the song? Because he was jealous of Williams and his writing skills.

“After making six albums that I wrote and produced myself, the biggest hit of my career was written by somebody else,” Thicke said. “And I was jealous and wanted some of the credit.”

Thicke goes on to confirm that, yes, he was in the studio when “Blurred Lines” was created — but he had also taken Vicodin and drank alcohol that day. (So apparently the memory is fuzzy?)

“I thought I wanted — I — I wanted to be more involved than I actually was by the time, nine months later, it became a huge hit and I wanted credit,” Thicke said. “So I started kind of convincing myself that I was a little more part of it than I was and I — because I didn’t want him — I wanted some credit for this big hit.” Thicke goes on to say that, honestly, the song was all Williams.

Yeah, try to sort that out. There’s also a portion where he tries to explain why the attorneys should believe that he’s a liar, as proof that he wasn’t telling the truth in the GQ story. Thicke says that he’ll say whatever it takes to sell albums in interviews, so it shouldn’t be taken as fact.

“Do you consider yourself an honest person?” the attorney asks.

“No,” Thicke responds. “That’s why I’m separated.”
