Paula Deen controversy

Disgraced celebrity TV Chef Paula Deen responded to renewed charges of racism by firing her social media manager, whom she claims posted a 4-year-old picture of her son in brown face makeup on social media.

The firestorm erupted after Deen, 68, seemingly posted the image of herself dressed as Lucille Ball and her 45-year-old son, Bobby, wearing brown face as latin band director Ricky Ricardo.

The photo was accompanied by the caption: "Lucyyyyyyy! You got a lot of esplainin' to do!" with the hashtag "#TransformationTuesday."

Ball's real-life husband, actor Desi Arnaz, Sr., who played Ricardo, was a white Cuban. The image was therefore more controversial because white Cubans look down on dark skinned Cubans in the same way some white Americans are racist towards dark skinned Americans.

After the image appeared on her page on Tuesday, Deen's publicist released a statement clearing Deen of any responsibility.

"This photograph is from a Halloween episode of Paula's Best Dishes that aired in 2011. Paula immediately had this picture taken down as soon as she saw the post and apologizes to all who were offended. As such, Paula Deen Ventures has terminated their relationship with this Social Media Manager."

Deen and her brother were sued in 2013 by Lisa T. Jackson, the former manager of her Savannah, GA restaurants, who accused them of sexual and racial harassment.

Paulaaaaaa are you missing the point? Ok your missing the point, so let me esplannnnn it to you. it doesn't matter who put the picture of, or what ear it was taken in. Your boy should not have been allowed to wear black face, it's offensive. And especially to play Ricky? Ricky was olive complexion not dark skinned by the way... Can we give Paula the Jameson award?

If you can find a color photo of Desi Arnaz, you will see that he was about the same shade as Tyra. Also, on the episode of I love Lucy where she was about to give birth, he did a show in costume similar to African warrior tribes and gave a short speech about Cubans and ties to Africa. Acknowledging a black or African lineage wasn't something that was common back then.

Paula Deen did nothing wrong but her team needs to be aware of the kind of images that go live on social media. Especially since that scandal was pretty recent.

"The image was therefore more controversial because white Cubans look down on dark skinned Cubans in the same way some white Americans are racist towards dark skinned Americans" ...and the same way African Americans do! Tone discrimination is in every culture...I first learned with India.

    • Ali

Next people are going to be upset that she has a red wig on. This obviously was intended as an innocent and humorous act trying to portray The classic and beloved TV sitcom of 'I love Lucy'. People should lighten up.
