Singer Angie Stone and the 1970s rap group Sequence are involved in an ongoing legal dispute with singer/songwriter Bruno Mars and DJ Mark Ronson over their sampled songs “Funk You Up” and the Grammy Award-winning “Uptown Funk”.
Sequence was one of the first bold name female rap groups on the hip hop scene in the 1970s.
Their songs have been sampled dozens of times by multiple artists including Mars, Ronson, Dr. Dre, Erykah Badu, Trina, En Vogue, and Old dirty Bastard.
Ronson’s 2014 music video for “Uptown Funk”, featuring Mars, garnered over 1.3 billion views on Youtube.com.
“This is not and has not been an overnight issue, nor following the Grammy bandwagon party,” wrote publicist Kali Bowyer in an email to Sandrarose.com. “This fight did not just begin. The issues and paperwork date back going on close to two years.”
She added: “With respect to [the] Robinson family, it has been quite a lengthy process of formal and informal dealings with the Robinson family. It has been a rough ride for the ladies, in attempts to settle all issues surrounding the music.”

Both Angie Stone, along with Blondy of the 70’s first female hip-hop group “The Sequence”, publicly spoke out yesterday, on the facts relating to the issues surrounding the song “Uptown Funk” performed by Bruno Mars. and in relation to the Robinson family and their 1979 song “Funk You Up”.
This is not and has not been an overnight issue, nor following the Grammy bandwagon party. This fight did not just begin, the issues and paperwork date back going on close to two years, over the songs ‘Uptown Funk” and “Funk You Up”, and with the issue in respects to Bruno dates back to the actual release date of “Uptown Funk”.
With respect to Robinson family, it has been quite a lengthy process of formal and informal dealings with the Robinson family, it has been a rough ride for the ladies, in attempts to settle all issues surrounding the music.
However Mark Ronson, along with everyone involved was put on notice upon the release of the song “Uptown Funk”.
After a total of eleven writers were mentioned, as writers, of the song “Uptown Funk” during the Grammy Awards, and the “Sequence” was then omitted from said list, the fight has taken a different turn.
Other artists who have sampled and used their song “Funk You Up”, are as follows: (besides Bruno Mars)
Dr Dre, Erykah Badu, Trina, En Vogue, Old dirty Bastard, and that’s just to name a few, the list goes on.
Cheryl Cook (Cheryl The Pearl), Gwendolyn Chisolm (Blondie), and lead singer/rapper Angie Brown Stone (Angie B.) aka “The Sequence”, will continue to move forward with legal remedies this week.
However, Bruno Mars and Mark Ronson, along with their legal counsel should look forward to a resolve as we would hate for this to get any uglier than it is now. As well as hopefully put this to bed, and move forward in their lives, and do what they do best, making hit records.

They just now hearing it?
Hope that don’t mess up Trinidad James paper.
Don’t believe me, just watch
N*gga n*gga n*gga
I have nothing… *shrugs*
He was involved in the song too ?
Didn’t know Mr. James was also responsible for this song. Welp if so right is right. Happy TGIT yall.
Yes lol
Clear it up. Please clear the music accordingly, it’s cheaper to do it up front then on the back end
Sewwww manty can’t grasp that part.
Yeah, he should’ve won a Grammy.
But there was some stipulation because of the category the song won for, only the performers won awards.
Not song writers…

We gone funk you right on up……..for stealing our shit. LOL
I can’t tell which one is Angie stone In the yellow. *shamed*
If they win do they even get anything. I mean due to the Robinsons and their thievery and shenantigans through the years.
The first one lol I had to concentrate
Come thru Angie with the 70s smokey eye steez.
Lmbo!!! My goodness let me go back
I heard in a report, he settled for an undisclosed amount… Do they even have rights to Funk you up? And didn’t they sample that from another artist as well lol. They sue for anything today. everything has already been done at some point lol
That was funny. ?
Get y’all money! I’m so sick of people stealing from Black folk! They are not only trying to not pay them, but not give them their credit either!
I saw him at the Mezzanine, when it first came out.
It was fun. He was entertaining.
I never seen someone let that many women on stage. Straight ratchets too *Nose laugh*.
….I said what I said about this yesterday and it’s not gonna change.
Both Angie Stone, along with Blondy of the 70’s first female hip-hop group “The Sequence”, publicly spoke out yesterday, on the facts relating to the issues surrounding the song “Uptown Funk” performed by Bruno Mars.
——–
It’s not Bruno’s song though…..so why throw his name in the front of this like he is responsible for getting clearance? smfh
What did you say? Ion remember…
Yes but that blush tho. Just a mess. Like they just slapped on any color. Lol.
I know. I know. There wasn’t much to choose from in our color palette back then.
Nobody could tell them they weren’t fly. ?
Uptown Funk” winning a GRAMMY for Record Of The Year yesterday (February 15) also made James a recipient of The Golden Gramophone.
“Sometimes you just can’t appreciate the greatness of something until you’re in the moment,” the ATL rapper says during an exclusive interview with HipHopDX. “That song is a big song that’s touched this generation.”
Having the description of GRAMMY Award-winning artist attached to his name is something he’s become more than grateful for.
Mark Robson is a huge producer out of England but he’s so commercial ,they’re better producers out there ,the media focuses so intensely on a select few as a result we miss out on a lot of great music

If that is the case, why was it even allowed to be released and used for the NBA and tons of commercials? Why are yall not suing all of those people using “stolen material”
Here is the whole convoluted mess as I understand it.
Sugar Hill Records stole this and Rappers Delight (they even said this on Unsung. But Niles Rogers BEEN saying this) and A LOT OF OTHER SONGS to begin with. This is why Dr. Dre didnt have to pay Angie when he used the song for “Head Ringing”. Its NOT hers. She NEVER owned the rights. The ROBINSONS never cleared the samples to damn start with.
“Theres a song thief in Lincoln Pawk!”
That there was no way they just heard this damn song. smh. Song been out all over the place this long and yall just now going to court?
Well what about Dr. Dre. He “stole” it too no?
The band who “stole” it is not all white. Nor are the producers or the label. So…and they are not the only ones who have “stolen” this song.
Girl please. This is not a Black people vs White people issue.
They’ve been fighting this for 2 years. Just now made the battle public because its taking too long.
There’s the issue. In order for it to be stolen from her/the group, they have to own it. That’s why most artist fight for the rights to their music…
SO more than likely the band and Bruno won’t have to pay them either. And they know this so why act like…matter of fact never mind. Can’t sue for something you never owned.
And they need to get the rights FIRST before they can go after anyone. They are barking up the wrong tree at this point.
Wow. Lots of really bad makeup back in those days.
They shoulda sued their makeup artist for making them look like clowns.
That’s all I got.
They are not going to see a dime. They don’t even own their own song. That’s why Dre who also used the song, never had to pay them.
It seems as if Angela would KNOW this. According to her everyone stole from this ONE damn SONG. She keeps LOSING over it too. She STILL says to this very DAY that she didnt get any money off of the “Head Ringing” sample. Well ma’am, you’re not gonna. And THIS might be futile as well. We shall see.
You might be right about that.
Angie and the gang don’t even own their own song. But I guess the person who sent Sandra this email forgot that part. Dumb shyt.
Thanks for the info! I did not know that !
I guess music now days is ripped off from the music from back in the day. Most of today’s music is whack. They have to steal, do remakes to give us decent music and it still doesn’t work.
All she is going to get is credit MAYBE for writing it. Which is what Dr. Dre gave her. Writing credit. Under her original name of Angela Brown. Which is not the same as rights to the sample.
And after that whole thing with Dre, here they go trying it again. smdh. Like they don’t already know where the problem really is.
Hell that “smokey eye” is burnt the hell up! LOL
Uptown funk is my shit tho…Angie did your daughter fix her toof that you knocked out ?
Makeup was not made for black women back then so my aunt tells me.
Nor is that the same money. Chump change. (to them) so they might have to pay that and dismiss her. But doing all this and yall KNOW yall don’t onw shyt AND that you tried it before and was told GTFOH? Bye Angie and the girls.
Them not having the rights doesn’t surprise me one bit…most black artist back then didn’t own the rights to their music because they were too happy to be in the industry and lacked the necessary business skills/knowledge. Prime example of a few modern day artists…TLC and Tony Braxton
Cheryl the Pearl looks like one of the dance moms on Bring It in that top left pic. That’s all I got.
Who has actually had to pay her for the song? WHO? Out of the people listed in the write up? Oh ok. Did they sue them all as well? Oh ok. Angie, girl put your energy into getting your rights and making an album. Then come back to this here…
An even better question is…has her attorney(s) explained this to her?
RIGHT! And after the case with Dre, HOW is she not understanding any of this?! SO you like paying lawyers for nothing?
Now why you had to drag that toof into this? LOL
I sure hope it has been explained. This is not her first copyrights rodeo. She pops up every single time somebody samples this song. Since Dr. Dre in 1995. 21 years she been in and out of court over this stupid ass song.
Give them a break ladies. They didn’t have much to choose from. The makeup back in the day was not geared toward black women.
Exactly! The attorney’s like this chic really is stoned…let me collect these coins…
And not seeing not one red cent. Why keep making dummy moves?
It’s a shame how so many folks were robbed. Leland Robinson would get the money since Joey passed.
Lol
Right! I would keep right on collecting my coins. Angie and the gang have been in and out of court for 21 years over this song and still not seeing any money. Girl bye. They done told you the same thing 21 times. This time won’t be any different
*whispers* But it’s not Angie’s song though….but God Bless her.
New Post
They stole it from somebody, tho’.
THAT’S WASTING A LOT OF PEOPLE’S TIME…I WONDER IF IT’S LIKE ACCIDENT SUITS WHERE YOU DON’T PAY IF NOTHING IS RECOVERED. HMM…
But they made it work.
LOL
uptown funk…..great workout jam
Wait how old is Angie Stone???!! wtf… She looked way in her 20’s in that picture.. I’m bugging.
Anybody else watching Vinyl on HBO?
Bruno is Filipino. Filipinos hate blacks. Why is he singing/stealing black music? ?
Don’t know if anyone said this already… but the only thing I can think of when I look at the photo is Big Bird… IJS
I thought uptown funk was based off Morris Day and The Time’s song “The Bird”
I don’t know anything about (The Sequence) but I love the intro song to
Lil Mo and Quick Silva’s morning show on 93.9 WKYS {GIVE ME THAT
FUNK…GIVE ME THAT FUNK…GOOD MORNING…HEY GOOD MORNING}. That’s all I’ve got for this.
I don’t mean no harm by saying this but that song is annoying. I heard they offered that song to Prince and he passed on it. I’m glad he did. Sorry, not sorry.
I didn’t drag the toof in it Ms Angie knocked it into this convo ?
She needs her money from him too. He sure has it. Black people try to get over on other Black people too. Especially a group of Black women from the 70s. Pharrell did it to Marvin Gaye.
Whatever the case, they need their money from all they asses.
There was Fashion Fair if you had a little green and Posner if you shopped the drug store for cosmetics. I think Ultra Sheen had a line also.
Well, Bruno team needs to pay up if it’s true. ? Unless Ms. “B” Angie B cut a side deal. Cause I personally know the other two chicks, life has not been a walk in the limelight. So they may not have known. ?
You can’t collect on something you never owned yourself. That’s the catch. Angie been doing this same case with several people for about 21 years. smh.
That whack track is a kamikaze of everyone from Funkadelic to Zapp. It would be something if all those acts came for Mark Ronson.
I hate that song.
Yeah I doubt they will see anything and I am sure Marc Ronson probably cleared whatever sample he too with the Robison family who I believe own rights to the song so I’m confused on the lawsuit
You can actually hear both songs in Uptown funk. Its almost like a mixture of the two.
I don’t think the own the rights to the song. The Robison’s and Sugar Hill records probably do and I can’t see Marc Ronson not clearing it with them. The Robison family probably didn’t pass earnings on to Angie and crew
Those Robinsons were some shady arse people. If Marc didn’t the surviving son will get it not Sequence.
Angie stone still looks the same. I’m not mad at her get your money?
I listened intently but I couldn’t hear “Funk You Up” or the original “Uptown Funk” in the song at all.
Well he’s have Puerto Rican and they like black ppl. Seem to have a pretty good relationship so hey.
How many people does it take to “write” a damn song these days? This is crazy. All this sampling shows a lack of creativity at some level, though I am glad some of these foundation people can get some paper.
They are going to lose they cannot keep cutting checks because people think they should get a check Trinidad James did not write the song but is getting publishing that is not right and screwed up .
Those two songs sound nothing alike.
Uptown has about 20thousand writers.
Writer(s)
Jeff Bhasker Philip Lawrence Bruno Mars Mark Ronson Nicholas Williams Devon Gallaspy Lonnie Simmons The Gap Band Rudolph Taylor
If you listen to the end of Uptown funk were they’re saying “uptown funk you up, uptown funk you over and over. I knew I heard it before Bruno and Mark. Wasn’t til my gma pointed out did I realize why it sounded familiar.
Didn’t they use Oops upside your head by The Gap band in this song too? Or is that just in my head.?
All three of them look like drag queens
A few years ago a producer told me that the younger artists don’t have any professionalism. Many have sampled older songs from major artists thinking no one remembers them and/or they’re dead. They sample without paying for it. After the lawsuit against Pharrell and Thicke I think that will stop.
People should stop sending in uncopyrighted work too. Years ago I listened to the recording lawsuit against MJ for Billie Jean. That woman’s song sounded just like it yet the judge threw it out!!!
I did listen to Angie’s Funk song and Bruno’s. They’re not as close as Marvin Gaye’s song and Robin Thicke’s. Today, these artists better be very careful who’s writing their songs. They might’ve stolen it from someone else and they don’t have a clue they’re singing it.
Uptown funk clearly sampled Sequence.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVr4DedhZ_k
FF was so expensive. I remember eyeliner was $10 and that was in the 80s!
If true, they probably want this to quietly go away. Nothing like Pharrell and Thicke!
That song already has 10 writers listed. If they win, they will join the ranks of the Gap Band who also got credits for use of lyrics in the song.
Wow, he’s a very prolific lyricist.
Angie looks cute there.
I remember spending close to $70 in the late 80s for fade cream, foundation and concealer. Since then, I stopped going to the counter.
TRUE!! Everybody samples from someone else at some given point.
That’s Blondie in the middle, and Angie on the left.
Yes but don’t those artist who have had their music sampled entitled to some sort of payment for their originality….That’s what’s wrong with today’s music industry there is a ridiculously huge lack of creativity and originality no one wants to come up with their own sound they just wanna sample someone else’s work…
I just listened to the song. I must be death tone because I don’t hear Funk You Up in Uptown Funk.
Was Florie Roberts around?? I know Fashion Fair and even Mary Kay had a rack my aunts looking right orange and oily. My mom use to wear Posner Get Down Brown, that red sponge, black lipliner skinny drawn on eyebrows Plucked them all off just to draw them back on..lol (Take me Jesus)
been going on for over 2 years re read the post idiot
Yep and I remember my grandmother had Barbara Walden curling cream. It was for black folks but it helped you get a fresh roller set in an hour without heat.
Apparently Bruno Mars is not black like at all whatsoever (he sure had me fooled), but has managed to make a career appropriating black culture, and then goes on to win a grammy that James was not allowed to take home due to a bullshit stipulation. I dont like to seem like im playig the race card but #culturevulture I wonder if he will also win a grammy for this

Smh #youngings
She asked me what I said YESTERDAY. Read the comment or stfu.
Reminds me of Robin Thicke type of lawsuit…
Him n Bruno Mars both have the same type of hairstyle…
I love Bruno but hopefully this will not end gis career like Robin Thicke
Mark Ronson is a culture vulture. I don’t care if he credits the black artists because at the end of the day he is the one profiting. He won a Grammy for ‘Uptown Funk’ and thanked the black artists who created the sound yet he and Bruno were rewarded with the Grammy while those black artists get nothing. Others steal our sound and culture and get all the credit and critical acclaim. Uptown Funk ripped off so many songs.
I just hate blush on black women… we are not naturally rosy…. we look so beautiful with our natural cheekbones..
