Police in Bridgeport, Connecticut are calling Shanta Jordan a hero after she dived in front of a speeding car to save a boy she didn’t know.
CCTV footage of the horrific accident shows a woman walking along a sidewalk ahead of two boys.
Seconds later, Jordan comes into the frame as she threw her body in front of the second boy just as a car barreled toward him.
The car struck both Jordan and the boy, crushing them against a stone wall. They survived the impact but they were hospitalized with multiple fractures and internal injuries.
The other boy was also hit by the car and knocked to the ground but he escaped without injury.
The boy’s frantic mother assisted her other son off the ground before running for help.
Police say Jordan’s quick thinking and bravery saved the boy’s life.
She realized she didn’t have time to push him out of the way of the speeding car so she sacrificed her body for his by absorbing the impact of the crash.
“She is a heroine. That’s what she is,” said Bridgeport Police Chief A.J. Perez. “She is a great person, and she is an asset to this community.”
“If she did not step in, the child would be in direct contact with the motor vehicle against the wall and most likely, he would have perished,” said Perez.
Police and local leaders will honor Jordan at a ceremony at City Hall next week.
“Amazing woman, she is so brave for that,” Jordan’s friend and neighbor said. “If it wasn’t for her, that boy would not made it.”
Doctors initially feared they would have to amputate the boy’s legs, but they were able to avoid amputation.
The driver of the car was also hospitalized. He faces several charges, including reckless driving.
