Pop singer Beyonce reportedly cried her eyes out after Kanye West rudely disrupted music legend Taylor Swift‘s acceptance speech at the 2009 Video Music Awards.
The troubled musician shocked everyone when he ran onstage, took the mic out of Taylor’s hand and loudly proclaimed Beyonce “had one of the best videos of all time.”
The audience booed Kanye, whose slow descent into madness began in 2007 when his beloved mom, Donda West died of complications following a liposuction procedure.
According to former MTV boss Van Toffler, Kanye’s rant left Taylor crying inconsolably, and Beyonce was also in tears backstage.
Toffler’s behind-the-scenes perspective gives insight into why Jay Z and Beyonce distanced themselves from Kanye immediately after the awards show.
Toffler recalled the incident during a sit-down interview with Hollywood Reporter magazine.
What is your favorite VMAs story?
“When Kanye walked up onstage with Taylor [Swift] that year, it turned out that Taylor had to go onstage to do her song five minutes later. I ran out of the truck to see that everything was all right, and Taylor and her mom were crying hysterically. I’m not always wonderful with emotions. I didn’t know what to say. Then I went backstage, and Beyonce was crying, too.”
