Aubrey ODay

Aubrey O’Day‘s fans were horrified by her distorted facial features in an ad posted to her Instagram.com page on Thursday. The 33-year-old former Danity Kane member is barely recognizable in the ad for an eyelash kit.

“Too much makeup and plumping girl! Your [sic] so hot without all this junk!” one shocked fan wrote in the comments.

Aubrey might be suffering from Body Image Disorder, a mental illness involving a distorted self image that causes the sufferer to obsess over a perceived flaw.

The sufferer spends hours in the mirror obsessing over imagined flaws in their appearance.

Signs & Symptoms

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-V) says the sufferer needs to exhibit the following three signs or symptoms to be diagnosed with Body Image Disorder or Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD):

    1. A preoccupation with a defect in appearance. The defect is either imagined, or, if a slight physical anomaly is present, the individual’s concern is markedly excessive.

    2. The preoccupation must cause significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning.

    3. The preoccupation is not better accounted for by another mental disorder (e.g., dissatisfaction with body shape and size in Anorexia Nervosa).

Other comorbid conditions that are linked to BDD includes anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideations.

Treatment

Treatment for BDD includes Cognitive and behavioral and talk therapy, antidepressant and anti anxiety medications.

Experts urge parents and caregivers to avoid telling children how beautiful or pretty they are. This can lead to body confidence issues and narcissism later on in life.
