An immigrant daycare worker who was arrested after breaking a baby’s legs told police she would “rather be deported than go to jail”. Elvira Ortega, 66, of Utah, was arrested after a child in her care was transported to a hospital with broken legs.
Ortega is facing felony child abuse charges after she told police she slammed the boy’s legs down on the bathroom floor, fracturing both of his legs below the knees.
The baby is less than a year old and was under the care of Ortega at an unlicensed daycare inside her home. Ortega was caring for multiple children at the time of the incident on Feb. 23.
Salt Lake City Police Det. Greg Wilking would not confirm Ortega’s immigration status to a Fox News affiliate reporter.
