A Chicago judge withdrew a default judgment against R. Kelly after his lawyers said the R&B singer can’t read.
Cook County Judge Moira Johnson granted the default judgment against Kelly after he failed to respond to a lawsuit filed by one of his accusers.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Johnson reinstated the lawsuit but withdrew an earlier judgment after Kelly’s lawyers said he never responded to the lawsuit because he is illiterate and couldn’t read the court documents when he was served.
The lawsuit was filed by a woman identified as “H.W” who is one of four women that Kelly is charged with molesting in a criminal indictment. The woman claims she was sexually abused by Kelly in 1996 when she was 16.
Kelly is scheduled to appear at another hearing related to a child support case on Wednesday.
