The Biden administration announced a 3-month federal gas tax holiday on Wednesday. A move that will save motorists over 18 cents per gallon at the gas pumps.
US gas prices hit a record $5 a gallon earlier this month. Last week, the President announced a proposal for a gas tax holiday which must be approved by Congress.
“By suspending the 18-cent federal gas tax for the next 90 days, we can bring down the price of gas and give families just a little bit of relief,” Joe Biden said Wednesday from the White House.
He also urged states and local governments to suspend their gas taxes.
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp suspended gas tax in March, saving consumers 29 cents per gallon at the pump. The tax holiday will be in effect until mid-July. Gas prices in Georgia hover just above $4 a gallon.
Former President Barack Obama once opposed a federal gas tax holiday, which he referred to as “a gimmick”.
“Barack Obama was right. A gas tax holiday was a bad idea in 2008 and it’s a bad idea today,” Senator Bernie Sanders tweeted in March.
