A woman in Mexico is accused of assaulting a gay couple by spraying holy water on them for hugging near a church.
The incident was caught on video and viewed over 400,000 times on TikTok on Thursday. The gay couple – Leonardo Hernandez and his partner were hugging near a church in Toluca, around 50 miles west of Mexico City – when a woman rushed out of the church and accused them of immoral behavior.
“Get out right now! I’m going to call the police,” she said, as she sprayed the couple and made the sign of the cross.
The woman also accused the lovers of trespassing on church property. “They are not from here,” she told a police officer on her cell phone.
The woman implied that the gay couple must be from America. “They come from other depraved countries to teach immorality to the youth here,” she told police on the phone.
At one point, Hernandez spoke to the officer on the phone saying he and his partner were not doing anything wrong before the woman tried to “run us out of here.”
“It is bad to hate, lady,” he told the woman in Spanish.
The officer advised the couple to leave church grounds even though the woman was discriminating against them. Hernandez thanked the officer before the video ended.
In the video caption, Hernandez wrote: “It’s difficult to understand that someone can treat you like this for loving freely [red broken heart emoji]. Thanks to the authorities and people of the church who decided to act with love and consistency.”
