A San Antonio woman was sentenced to 55 years in prison for killing an aspiring rapper related to Houston singer Beyonce.
Sasha Skare, 23, was convicted Thursday in the shooting death of aspiring rapper Kardone, real name Martell Derouen.
Skare testified on Aug. 30 that an argument with Kardone escalated to violence on Jan. 22, 2021, in his San Antonio apartment. She alleged that he punched and choked her before she managed to flee his apartment with her cellphone and his gun.
During the trial, text messages revealed that Kardone told her to return the firearm and to collect her belongings.
Skare testified that she returned to his apartment and began knocking on the door when the gun went off.
My intent was just to get his attention,” Skare said on the stand. “As I was knocking on the door, I just threw the gun up, and it just shot.”
Kardone died from a single gunshot wound to the head. His body was found four days later, on Jan. 26, when police went to the apartment to do a welfare check, KSAT reported.
On Friday, Sept. 1, Skare was sentenced to 55 years with the possibility of parole after 27.5 years.
She declined a plea deal for a 20-year prison sentence a week before the sentencing. She would’ve been eligible for parole after 10 years.
Kardone’s family hugged each other after the sentencing was read in court.
“The pain and agony you brought upon my family is unbearable. Fix your sheets, if you have any, because you’ve made your bed, and now it’s time for you to lay in it,” Kardone’s sister, Kami Derouen, said to Skare during her victim impact statement on Friday.
During deliberations on Thursday, the jury asked the judge how much time Skare served in jail while awaiting trial and if the time served counted towards her sentence.
