Snoop Dogg says he and wife Shante Broadus would be divorced if it wasn’t for Charlie Wilson.
Snoop, 52, gave a heartfelt speech at Wilson’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on Monday.
He said Wilson convinced him not to blow a good thing.
“This man right here means the world to me, not just musically but personally, especially when it comes to me and my wife because there were certain phases in my life where I felt like, ‘I should be by myself, I should do this alone,'” Snoop said.
He explained that Wilson, 71, “was the only one man enough to pull me to the side and let me know, ‘Don’t blow a good thing. Get back home. You got the greatest woman in the world. You have a family.'”
The “Gin and Juice” rapper also spoke highly of Wilson’s wife, Mahin Wilson.
“Let me tell you about his wife, because she deserves a lot of credit for this. When we first got with Charlie, when I was on Death Row Records, and he was just beginning his rehabilitation, his wife at the time was his counselor,” Snoop recalled.
“She came in the studio, and she told us, ‘Nobody can smoke if Charlie is in the studio.’ So, the first day we was like, ‘Man, who is this lady trying to tell us what to do? What you smoking? We doing what we want to do. You can kick rocks with all that.'”
The next day, Mahin pulled Snoop to the side for a heart-to-heart talk.
“She pulled me to the side, and she talked to me like my mother — and I was always taught by my mother to respect women and respect your elders,” said Snoop. “She put so much respect on me that we didn’t smoke in the studio around Charlie Wilson when we was working.”
Snoop and Wilson first collaborated on The Doggfather album in 1996 which spawned their hit single “Snoop’s Upside Ya Head”. They continued to work together over the years.
Snoop thanked Wilson for teaching him showmanship, business and respect for his family.
“That’s the treasure to me. because when we get in this industry, we don’t really have people who we can count on, who we can go to. We get so far in this industry that you lose contact,” said Snoop. “So, to have somebody like you to stay in my life and to be there for me and my family means the world to me, Charlie.”
Snoop married his high school girlfriend, Shante Taylor, on June 14, 1997.
The couple had their ups and downs throughout their 26-year marriage. They split when Snoop fathered at least one child outside of their marriage.
In April 2008, Snoop and Shante renewed their vows in a ceremony held at Wilson’s ranch near Los Angeles.
Snoop and Shante share three children, daughter Cori, 24, and sons Cordé, 29, and Cordell, 26. Snoop also has a son, Julian, from an extramarital affair.
