Ashley Elkins is confirmed dead 6 days after she went missing near Detroit, Michigan. Elkins, a 30-year-old hairstylist, disappeared after her ex-boyfriend made a fake hair appointment last week.
“They had broken up in September. We know that Ashley didn’t want anything to do with him,” her uncle, Maurice Morton told Local News 4 on Wednesday.
Morton, who is the spokesperson for the family, said they met with police and were advised that Elkins is deceased. He said police don’t have her body, but they have a good idea where her remains can be found.
The Warren and Roseville Police Departments executed a search warrant at the apartment of Deandre Booker, 32. Police found Elkins’s car at the apartment complex in Roseville. They also seized a dumpster on the property.
Other evidence found in Booker’s apartment shows Elkins met with foul play in the residence, police said.
“Our information is this was a homicide as all the evidence is indicating there was a violent end,” Roseville Police Chief Mitch Berlin said on Wednesday.
According to family members, Elkins left her Warren home on Knox Avenue around 8:30 a.m. to run errands on Jan. 2.
Elkins’s mother, Monika Elkins, FaceTimed Elkins, but she didn’t answer or call back.
Elkins’s sisters used a phone app to ping her last location. The last place Elkins’s phone pinged was at Booker’s apartment complex.
Booker will be arraigned at the Roseville District Court at 10 a.m. Thursday. He faces related charges, but “not for murder at this time,” said Morton, who added that the family was frustrated with the pace of the investigation.
“We felt that things could have gone faster,” he said. “But we do know that since Monday the police have worked hard. We’re thankful to get to the point of getting some information. It’s not the information we would want…”
Morton said Elkins’ sons, ages 10 and 7, are grieving the loss of their mother. The boys are in the care of their father and grandparents.
