Police arrested Sherrone Moore after he was fired as head coach of the University of Michigan football team.

The University fired the Wolverines coach on Wednesday, December 10, after an investigation determined he was having an affair with his assistant.

The university issued a statement Wednesday night that Moore was let go for engaging in an “inappropriate relationship with a staff member.”

“This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior,” Michigan director of athletics Warde Manuel said in a statement on Wednesday.

Moore, 39, has been married for 10 years to his wife, Kelli. The couple has three daughters.

On Wednesday evening, Moore was detained by police after he broke into his assistant’s home. Police said Moore was suicidal.

“The City of Saline Police Department assisted in locating and detaining former University of Michigan football coach Sherrone Moore,” ESPN’s Dan Wetzel reported. “Mr. Moore was turned over to the Pittsfield Township Police Department for investigation into potential charges.”

Moore’s lover wasn’t named, but sleuths on X (Twitter) identified her as his executive assistant who is reportedly pregnant and engaged to another man.

An X user wrote: “This is apparently the girl that Sherrone Moore was sleeping with… she is also the daughter of Chicago Bears executive scout, Jeff Shiver.”

Moore began his coaching career as the Wolverines Tight Ends coach from 2018-2020. He was promoted to head coach in 2024. Moore led the football team to a 7-5 record last year and a 9-3 record this year.

Biff Poggi has been named the interim football coach of the Wolverines.

Michigan will take on the Texas Longhorns (9-3) in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Eve.
