A former CIA agent was caught hiding $40 million worth of gold bars and $2 million cash inside his home.

David Rush is charged with stealing 303 gold bars worth $40 million and criminal theft of public money in a complaint filed last week. The gold bars and cash were seized during a raid on his Virginia home and a storage unit last week.

Federal agents raided his home and seized dozens of Rolexes and other expensive watches.

In a storage space near his office, investigators found more funds including foreign currency.

Rush worked in a managerial position at the CIA and had top secret-level clearance. He is accused of stealing the gold bars from the federal government. Rush allegedly stashed $2 million in cash at his home.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe referred the case to the FBI after an internal investigation, FOX4 News reports.

“The FBI is working closely with our partners at the CIA and the Department of Justice as we continue to investigate this matter fully,” the FBI said in a statement. “We are committed to following the facts, ensuring accountability, and pursuing justice in accordance with the law.”

Rush allegedly lied to his bosses about his background for 2 decades, according to the complaint filed in the Eastern District of Virginia.

He applied to work with the government three times. His first application claimed he graduated from Clemson University in 2000. In his second application, he said he had a graduate degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Rush was hired on his third try in 2009, after he claimed he graduated from the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School and he’d been a thesis adviser at the Air Force Institute of Technology. Rush also said he was a pilot for the Navy.

Rush didn’t graduate from any of the schools mentioned in his applications. He is not a pilot for the Navy and does not hold a pilot’s license.

This case highlights the government’s failure to conduct background checks and properly vet applicants for government jobs.
