Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston stands to earn tens of millions of dollars if he is drafted by an NFL team. But the 20-year-old Florida State University football and baseball star was issued a citation by police for stealing crab legs worth $32 from a Tallahassee Publix.
Winston was suspended from the FSU baseball team following his latest brush with the law.
Winston was caught shoplifting the package of crab legs at a Tallahassee Publix Monday night and was issued a citation, according to the Leon County Sheriff’s Office.
Major Michael Wood said during a press conference that Winston told police he just forgot to pay the $32 for the crab legs and other seafood items.
“Jameis Winston has not been arrested for any crime. He was issued a civil citation,” Wood said.
Winston has had other brushes with the law that were conveniently swept under the table because he is a prized athlete. Most recently, a former FSU student accused him of rape last year. But police claimed there was no evidence to arrest him.
Then, Winston was among a group of players questioned about an incident involving a BB gun battle on campus. And Tallahassee Burger King employees complained Winston was among players stealing soft drinks and making a mess in the store.
Winston’s citation (read: slap on the wrist) for stealing food comes as the NCAA announced a move to expand meal allowances for all athletes.
The NCAA took action after Connecticut guard Shabazz Napier complained during the Final Four that he sometimes went to bed hungry because he couldn’t afford food.
