A news reporter for New Jersey 12 Network was suspended after he gave his opinion about fatherless black men and crime during a live news report.
Sean Bergin was told to stay home after he made controversial statements live on the air about national crime statistics and fatherless black men.
After news of Bergin’s suspension began circulating, a new Facebook support page quickly garnered over 1,000 ‘Likes’. Many FB users expressed frustration with the TV station for censoring Bergin who was only telling the truth.
Bergin was reporting live on location from the scene of a memorial erected by neighbors and gang bangers for the shooter who executed a young NJ police officer.
Jersey City Police Officer Melvin Santiago was fatally wounded in a shootout as he responded to a report of a burglary at a Walgreens on Sunday. “Watch the TV news later — I’m going to be famous,” said Lawrence Campbell, who had stolen a gun from a Walgreens security guard earlier.
As Santiago pulled up in his patrol car, Campbell unleashed a volley of bullets into the patrol unit.
Santiago’s partner, Ismael Martinez, managed to escape uninjured. He and other officers returned fire, killing Campbell, 27.
Campbell’s wife angrily told reporters she wished her husband had killed more officers before he died. Her statements did not sit well with Bergin.
“It’s understandable. We decided to air it because it’s important to shine a light on this anti-cop mentality that has so contaminated America’s inner cities,” Bergin said during his live report.
Then Bergin began editorializing.
“This same sick, perverse line of thinking is evident from Jersey City to Newark and Patterson to Trenton. It has made the police officer’s job impossible, and it has got to stop. The underlying cause for all of this, of course, young black men growing up without fathers. Unfortunately, no one in the news media has the courage to touch that subject,” he added.
Bergin’s on-air comments were enough to get him suspended, according to a report in The Blaze. The segment has since been removed from News 12?s website and, according to the report, Bergin was asked to stay home during the early part of this week.
“It is News 12?s policy that reporters must be objective and not state personal opinions on-air,” said a spokesperson from News 12 in a statement to TheWrap. “In regards to the particular incident with Sean Bergin, the matter is being addressed internally and we don’t comment on personnel matters.” Source: Yahoo News
