Cortez Berry, the 18-year-old Georgia inmate whose brutal beating made headlines this week, was transferred to a maximum security prison, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.
The AJC confirmed Thursday that Berry was moved from the Burruss Correctional Training Center in Forsyth, to Smith State Prison in Glennville.
Berry began serving an eight-year prison sentence at Burruss on March 31, 2014, for armed robbery and carjacking.
Berry was reportedly beaten by 10 juvenile gang members after he refused to join their gang. The gang’s handiwork was photographed with an illegal cell phone and sent via text to Berry’s family and friends. The photo turned up on Facebook and went viral from there.
“The (Gangster Disciples) came in and told him that since he was turning 18, he might as well join the gang, because you about to go to the other side,” said Berry’s aunt Shavondria Wright. She was referring to the adult side of the prison where juvenile offenders go when they turn 18.
In the photo Berry is seen kneeling in a submissive posture in front of a 15-year-old gang member. A leash fashioned from material is tied around his neck. The other end of the leash is tied tightly around the 15-year-old’s left hand.
Wright is disappointed with the maximum security prison where Berry is now housed. Smith State Prison is not conveniently located near her. The violence at Burruss prison pales in comparison to Smith State Prison.
According to a report obtained by the AJC, Smith State prison is one of the three most dangerous prisons in Georgia.
7 inmates were murdered there since 2010.
“Why would they transfer him there to a maximum security prison?” said Wright. “I don’t think it is safer. What do people serving life care for hurting him?”
Wright told a reporter she was not notified of the transfer.
The family believes the transfer was in retaliation for talking to the media.
The Department of Corrections is still investigating the beating incident.

I understand where you are coming from. I just believe moreso in rehabilitative as opposed to retributive justice. I believe that for many so-called criminals, there is a chance of them becoming productive members of society. Also, i don’t believe that them being beat up behind bars helps them to be civil once they get out of prison. If we truly want people to straighten up and fly right, why not model that kind of behavior when they are in lockup?

Corrections system needs to be revamped. Its pretty much built to make you re-offend and end up back in jail. No one wants to hire a criminal no matter what the reason they went to jail, so they turn back to the streets and do the same ish that got them locked up in the first place. Not to mention the extremely high costs of fighting a charge i.e.: lawyer fees, probation fees, court fees. And if you don’t pay it you get sent right back. Terrible cycle

The system is designed to keep poor black people down. I’m extremely passionate about this issue. I know I can’t change the world but I refuse to sit and watch the prison system continue to be corrupt. A lot of people in jail are only in there because they don’t have the money or means to get out. There is no reason 97% of the county jail is black, while white people get out on PR Bonds all the time. Got people sitting in jail over a durn suspended license. What kind of foolishness is that? Like I said I can’t change the world but I will damn sure do whatever I can to fight injustice. I’m working on a non profit for 1st time offenders to help them get their life back on track. Someone has to give them a chance because the world sure won’t. Not everyone in jail is a criminal and I hate that a lot of people think that.

I get and agree with what you are saying. But the operative word is “should.” Mammies and pappies “should” take care of their parental responsibilities, but they don’t always. Does that mean the children should be left out in the cold? I “should” obey God at all times, but I don’t. And what does He do? He gives me another.chance. Parents should equip their kids with school supplies for school, but some of them don’t. Does that mean that that first grader should be failed for not coming to class prepared?
My point is, I believe he should be disciplined, but in a constructive manner.

the justice system does not care. They just see black and assume you’re guilty. I’m proof of that. I got caught up with the wrong crowd and got myself a felony. Granted it will get expunged in a few years, but what if I didn’t have my parents? What if they couldn’t have bailed me out or paid for a lawyer? My behind would behind would have been in jail for 10-30 for an armed robbery I WAS NOT PRESENT FOR. And you best believe I’m not the only one. My parents just had the means and community connections to get me out.

The prison system is flawed because they started coodling the criminals. Prison was in place as a deterrence. You commit a crime, you go to prison, endure the harsh time, come out & never do what you did again. But these criminals are being treated better than our children. Criminals get three good meals daily, free cable tv, free internet, free education, free medical care, free dental care, free bed. Most of our children do not have access to that. IE the teachers in the previous post. In third world countries, criminals get treated like criminals. They steal, cut their hand off, they don’t do it again. In America criminals get protected by the very same laws they break. F that! They can do the crime but wanna cry like bytches when they deal with hardness behind bars. Because they’re juveniles. The one with the “leash” in his hand is only 15. All juvenile inmates are housed separately from the hardened adult population until they turn 18. Then they are moved to the “other side” of the prison where they became jail bait.

MzWhang Its not that cut and dry. I was wrong for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, and I take full responsibility for that. I was trying to be grown so I have to deal with the grown consequences. HOWEVER I left BEFORE the crime occurred (2 hours prior to be exact) and had no knowledge that a crime was going to occur but because I was present with the perpetrators before the act, I got charged with the exact same thing they did. Guilty by association. I’m not blaming the system for choosing my friends, but I don’t think that if I was white I would have been charged with a crime. And that’s my issue with the justice system. I’m not saying I shouldn’t be punished. My behind had no business being there, but my life shouldn’t be ruined because I was 18 and not able to choose the right friends.

All I know is sentencing should be fair across the board. Don’t give Joe 5 years and Jaivion 15 for the same damn crime. THIS is what bothers me about the justice system. Some folks need to be locked up black and white but some need help or to be rehabbed.

Choices. Choices. I also notice people saying they wish they’d had kids. And every woman over 30 or so, is like you’re not as young as you think, don’t wait too long
I think the idea that you can wait forever is gradually going out of favor, and I definitely don’t want to be pregnant past say 32.

I absolutely agree. Same crime same punishment. The problem is the constitution gives the judge the power to choose the amount of crime. One crime can get 5-10 years, the judge decides. Make it like capital murder, instant life in prison.

@Misunderstood. The Day BD got sentenced. We witnessed a child molestor get off with 2 years probation. Nothing else. He has B felony…I won’t say the charge BC it would blow my cover but let’s just say nobody was hurt…no property damaged…no harm done. Just a silly dispute between him and the other BM that turned left. An argument

I’m not sure how somebody is being coddled when they’re being served slopped, raped and assaulted, and dealing with corrupt prison guards. And you’re locked up which means you’re told what to do, when to do it, and you’re behind bars. You have no power and control over your own life. I don’t understand the need to just make it as horrible as possible. You treat someone like an animal and they will behave like an animal. That’s part of the reason the recidivism rate is so high. You can tell a lot about a society by the way they treat their lowest members. How can you come out with humanity from a place where humanity is lost?
Murderers, rapists and molesters get off too easy. Folks will have one non violent slip up and me fawked for life… That’s crazy to me.

Same that has happened to my friends son. He supposedly went in fron of the judge on tuesday to see if his case could go to juvie or be thrown out. I don’t think the results were good. She hasn’t talked about it.

That really warms my heart because I truly have been depressed since all of this came to light. The “incident” happened in 2009 but I wasn’t brought into to til 2012. And since then it has turned my life upside down. I’m embarrassed because I fear that if I tell people I’m a felon they automatically judge me and think I’m going to rob or shoot them. Its just been a mess, but come April 23 all of it will be over. Hopefully

I’m sure they’re just glad you moved on with your life in the positive direction. Guilt is a very very bad emotion. Especially when you have learned from your mistakes and you don’t repeat them. As UnShakable said, God forgives us. It is not my place, or anybody’s, to say that somebody should be treated lower than dirt because of something they did that was wrong. God judges. There are laws and prison should not be a place where anything goes because these people are animals or nothing more than criminals. That makes everybody wrong. I will only say this. What MisU said about prison not being harsh enough in general…I agree. I know that having your freedom taken away is harsh. I know never truly being safe is harsh. I know that those two things are an every day reality in prison. I also know that I have a family member that has been in prison about 25 years now. He’s always asking for money to buy things, expensive care packages, and $100+ shoes. Gets pissed when he doesn’t get what be wants or people don’t visit him enough. His attitude is very entitled and I don’t believe he’s been rehabilitated at all. He’s essentially been taken care of and coddled for years and will be a useless leech if and when he gets out. Prison has not been nearly as harsh for him as it should be. It’s ridiculous.

KiMi, I know how it feels to beat yourself up about past mistakes. I’m still learning how to stop doing it to myself. Here is the thing. You aren’t perfect. You messed up. Ok. You realize that. You’ve learned from your mistake. You work hard and are a good mother. You stay focused on those things. ALWAYS. Even when you are down and get blue focus on the positive. Focus on the good in your life. There will always be mistakes made in life. It’s part of growth, and growth should only stop when you’re dead. I’m sure your parents and your son look at you as you are now with love and pride. Look at yourself the same way. That’s all that matters.

Ok. Went back and skimmed. Prison needs an overhaul. Period. I cosign. What lesson is it teaching? It’s a huge prison scandal at least 1-2 times a year. Guards smuggling shat in. Impregnation of female inmates. Inmates of both sexes wilding. Starts with the judicial system. All of it. Hand in hand they go. Gn.
The poor misguided youths who raped that 87 year old woman and forced her to drink bleach…SHOULD be served pate & foie gras for lunch. After all..we want them to see the error of their ways! God forbid they should be made to eat cold bologna sandwiches like common criminals!
But, yes, feed them slop. Let them be beaten and raped by everybody who found out what they did. Let them become angrier and hardened criminals and get out, then do it to somebody else. If the justice system focused on doing its job, instead of being evil and spiteful, those “youths” would never get out of prison in the first place.

i said in the other post on this topic that they should make these prisoners pick cotton or some similar backbreaking work from sun up til sundown – outside in the hot sun working like they’re on a plantation on a meal of oatmeal for breakfast and a lunchmeat sandwich on hard bread, with only water to drink. instead, they sit around watching television, joining gangs, beating and raping each other in a temperature controlled environment with warm, clean clothes, socks, shoes and even a Bible; which they use for everything except reading/understanding the word.
my sympathy/regard is for the victims of perpetrators. some folks never recover from the mental scars of an attack, even if it’s a robbery at a convenience store where no one was killed or injured. the memory of someone pushing a gun against your temple while you struggle to open a register that only has about $26 NEVER goes away. and when that shyt gets pleaded down cuz no one was killed or injured, it’s enough to make the victim seriously consider vigilantism.
that shyt ain’t cool. i do agree that the sentencing is harsher towards people of color, but WE know that so why do these niggas continue to put themselves in a situation where they know the consequences are going to be unfair to them simply because of their race. but i also agree that giving these sorry asses three hots and a cot in a temperature-controlled environment with all the comforts folks on the outside have isn’t encouraging them to never want to be imprisoned again.

I’ve never seen or heard a story of a prisoner dying from nutrient deficiency, starvation, food poisoning, etc. so although it may look like slop, it must meet the minimum nutritional standards or the prisoner advocacy groups would be screaming on the lawn of the white house. and dinty moore beef stew looks like stew but it tastes good as hell to me. ask a homeless person if they’ll take the prison food or go hungry and see what they say.

Now while i agree that inmates should have some human rights, I feel as though the way the system works inside of the jail IS a whole lot better than what folks are struggling for. Like food, shelter and healthcare. I think the system is flawed on both sides. You have victims who suffer their while lifetime, while the aggressor walks after X amount of years. And then you have the aggressor who may think that the system is a cake walk

I know folks who constantly watch there back because they expect something to happen to them again. So the thought that the aggressor will “rot in jail” is kinda like a small bandaid to them.
I feel that this is a good definition of what we call Karma. You can only wish that the offender feels the pain you have endured.

I think the prisoner should be in jail for a long time, or life, and I don’t think they should enjoy it. It should be a punishment. However, I don’t think they should be treated like animals. That doesn’t benefit anybody. Also, it is very hard to get over trauma, and the perpetrator should suffer. The victims have all my sympathy. But, sometimes you have to let go and let God. If the perpetrator destroys your life, they take even more from you.

This is true. I know grown men who have fears. And honestly I can’t fault them. I don’t think of them being any less of a man for now taking extra precautions when it comes to them and their families either. New (ex) Friend stayed strapped every where we went, even when he stayed with me it was always close by. He always feels the need to be “prepared” now. It actually makes me sad. His childhood wasn’t all cake, ice cream and bike rides either.
But, sometimes you have to let go and let God. If the perpetrator destroys your life, they take even more from you.

Prison was created as a deterrence to crime. Later on they added rehabilitation services to help lower the recidivism rate. It ain’t working. No, I don’t think they should get out because they find God. They get out if and when they serve their time. I don’t believe in light prison sentences or getting paroled after spending a little time in jail. Prisoners should go to prison. That’s not my issue. I just don’t think prison should be dehumanizing.

Remorse is show after one commits the crime, not while in prison. My brother is a felon, did 5 years, that’s how I gained custody of my disabled niece. Not once did I take her to see him. He wasn’t thinking of her when he did that dumb shyt with her in the car. She spent 3 weeks in foster care till I could come get her & I work for the system. He has since changed his life around, got his degree & is a mechanic. I’m proud of him. He has a good relationship with my niece but I’m not giving custody back to him. That’s my baby
Those criminals dehumanized their victims. Don’t give a fawk about them being dehumanized while paying for the crime. The victim is working on repairing their life & so should they. They make the choice to walk through that revolving door, the victim didn’t have a choice. Again no sympathy
some ppl no matter how hard they try, they just can’t grow (or they’re not mentally stable enough to know there is better).
I don’t think you ever get away with anything. I would pray that the victim finds a church, a support group, a victim advocate, or any type of life line. Oh, and intense therapy.

Petty mental illness is the biggest failure the government has. Not enough treatment facilities, look at the veterans once they return from war. No medical to remain stable. No caseworkers to make sure they keep their doctor’s appts. It’s sad & heart breaking
