Openly gay singer Frank Ocean is making a comeback by releasing a new album entitled Boys Don’t Cry.
Ocean announced his new album on his website Frankocean.com along with the caption, “I got two versions. I got twooo versions…”
His mother, Katonya Breaux, confirmed the new album on Monday, tweeting, “Yup. True :))”
Ocean had a large and very active female fan base before he announced his predilection for men in an emotional post on his personal Tumble account in 2012.
He wrote passionately about his unrequited love for a man who was already involved with a woman. The man later rejected him.
In an interview, Ocean said he “cried like a fucking baby” the night he posted his coming out letter. He respectfully declined requests to identify himself as either gay or bisexual.
Ocean’s female fans, who once littered the stage with their panties, abandoned him in droves.
And with gay men comprising less than 2% of the population, Ocean was left without a viable audience for his music.
The singer took a long hiatus to find himself and to work on a new strategy to resurrect his career. He returned in Nov. 2014 with new music entitled “Memries” and he covered Aaliyah’s “At Your Best (You Are Love)” this year.
Ocean’s last album was the critically-acclaimed, Grammy-winning channel ORANGE in 2012.
