It happened again: two Texas deputies are under investigation for the fatal shooting of a man who was standing with both arms held above his head in a recognized gesture of surrender.
The two Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies, Greg Vasquez and Robert Sanchez, responded to a domestic violence call at a home in the 24400 block of Walnut Pass. When they arrived they spotted a woman holding a baby and bleeding from her head. A shirtless man stood nearby wielding a knife.
The man was later identified as 41-year-old Gilbert Flores of San Antonio.
The deputies claim they tried to subdue Flores before they shot him. But cell phone video shows the moment when Flores was shot as he held his hands up.
The exclusive video, which can be viewed on KSAT-TV’s website, shows Flores standing with his empty hands up in the air before one of the deputies shot him.
Vasquez and Sanchez have been placed on paid administrative leave until an investigation into the shooting is completed.
Last year, the city of Ferguson, Missouri was polarized by violence and rioting after 19-year-old Michael Brown was fatally shot by a former Ferguson police officer. Witnesses say Brown was holding his hands up when he was shot and killed.
