Dick Clark Productions disputes Mariah Carey‘s claims that they “sabotaged” her New Year’s Rockin’ Eve performance in New York City. Carey, 46, blamed the production staff for technical difficulties at the start of her set.
The singer struggled through her first song when her backing track didn’t play on cue. The mishap forced Carey to ad lib her lyrics rather than lip sync like she wanted to.
Carey complained all through the track that she couldn’t hear the monitors while her vocals played in the background. It was an embarrassing spectacle.
“It just doesn’t get any better,” she told the crowd before leaving the stage. She later tweeted, “Sh-t happens.”.
Carey is known for lip syncing live shows — even shows she is paid a small fortune to sing live, such as her Las Vegas residency concerts.
Dick Clark Productions issued a statement, saying:
“As the premier producer of live television events for nearly 50 years, we pride ourselves on our reputation and long-standing relationships with artists. To suggest that dcp (Dick Clark Productions), as producer of music shows including the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and Academy of Country Music Awards, would ever intentionally compromise the success of any artist is defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd,” the statement said.
The Associated Press quoting an unnamed source also reported that other performers, including Gloria Estefan, rehearsed their sets but Carey didn’t bother to rehearse. Instead, she had a stand-in cover for her rehearsal even though she was there, probably getting back rubs from her boy toy.
