Doctors at Brooklyn’s Woodhull Medical Center declared Erica Garner brain dead — five days after she suffered a massive heart attack. Family members were called to the hospital to say their goodbyes before Garner, 27, is removed from life support.
The person updating Garner’s Twitter account complained on Tuesday that NYPD officers banned them from the intensive care unit where Garner has been since she suffered a heart attack on Saturday.
The relative tweeted Wednesday that a CAT scan revealed that she had suffered brain damage “from lack of oxygen while in cardiac arrest.”
The Twitter account dismissed a “rest in peace” tweet from Brooklyn city Councilman Jumaane Williams who indicated Garner had died.
“As we sent prayers up…so sorry to hear the news. RIP @es_snipes. That family still needs us #Garner,” Williams tweeted.
“She’s not gone, she’s brain dead,” Garner’s mother, Esaw Snipes, told the NY Daily News. “Physically she is still with us.”
Erica became a vocal activist against police brutality when her father Eric Garner died after a New York City police officer placed him in a chokehold in 2014.
She suffered her first heart attack after delivering her 2nd child — a son — in August. At the time, doctors diagnosed her with an enlarged heart that was discovered after she gave birth.
