Kenyan Lesbian Movie Set to Make History at Cannes Film Festival

Kenyan lesbian movie ‘Rafiki’ is set to make history when it debuts at the 71st annual Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, France.

‘Rafki’ stars Sheila Munyiva, left, and Samantha Mugatsia as Kena and Ziki, a lesbian couple who is forced to choose between happiness and their own personal safety.

‘Rifiki’, which is now banned in Kenya, is the first Kenyan movie about homosexuals to debut at the prestigious film festival.

‘Rafiki’ was directed by Wanuri Kahiu, pictured right, who also stars in the film.

LGBT causes are celebrated in parts of Europe and the Western Hemisphere, but homosexuality is a felony in Kenya where same-sex marriage is banned and same-sex relationships are not recognized.

Homosexuals and transgender Kenyans face prison and risk their lives on a daily basis.

Homosexuality is considered vulgar and repugnant to the “cultural values and morality” of Kenya.
