The decades old rape case involving NY radio jock Charlamagne tha god will remain closed, according to the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office in South Carolina.
Charlamagne, whose real name is Lenard Larry McKelvey, is accused of drugging and raping a 15-year-old girl.
The 40-year-old radio jock was arrested on July 2, 2001 and charged with “willfully, unlawfully, and feloniously engage in penile/vaginal intercourse with a fifteen year old female child.”
A rape test kit confirmed Jessica Reid was sexually assaulted. Reid and another teen claimed Charlamagne picked them up and “gave them a liquid to drink” that one of the girls claimed “tasted like soda,” according to the police report obtained by The Blast.
Reid’s friend said the last thing she remembered was waking up “with a man trying to kiss her.” She told the officer she fought the man off, and then found Reid “in the room across from where she was, naked and crying stating that she had been raped.” The girl then called her mom, who called 911.
Police who responded to the 911 call say Reid was “crying uncontrollably”.
Reid’s mother urged her daughter not to cooperate with the investigation. Charlamagne plead guilty to a lesser charge and the case was eventually closed in 2002.
Now 32, Reid says she wants the case reopened because she never received closure on the incident and she has not “been able to get over it.”
Reid’s mom, Joslyn, tells The Blast she originally urged her daughter not to cooperate with police because she was a minor.
Joslyn says she now supports her daughter “100%” and believes closure is needed to truly end Jessica’s “suffering and pain.”
Charlamagne, who candidly discussed the case on his radio show, on the Internet and in interviews, vigorously denies raping Reid — even though he pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of drugging a minor for indecent purposes.
