A man who was shot alongside Nipsey Hussle and another man outside the rapper’s clothing store has been arrested for gang ties to Nipsey.
It was previously reported that Nipsey went to his Marathon Clothing store on March 31 to donate free clothes to Kerry Lathan, an ex-con who was recently released from prison after serving 20 years.
Lathan and his nephew were talking with Nipsey outside the Marathon store when Eric Holder approached them and opened fire.
Lathan, 56, was shot in the back and is paralyzed from the waist down. Even though he is confined to a wheelchair, he was arrested on Friday at a halfway house and charged with associating with a known gang member, Nipsey.
Associating with known gang members violated the terms of Lathan’s probation. He is being held at the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles. Authorities plan to revoke his parole and send him back to prison.
Nipsey was a devout member of the notorious Rolling 60s Crips street gang. He never denounced his gang ties before he was gunned down on March 31. He wore blue – the color associated with the Crips – and he glorified the gang culture in his rap songs.
To balance his image as an unrepentant member of a violent street gang, Nipsey gave back to his community by providing jobs and educational opportunities to young people who grew up in his impoverished neighborhood.
He also purchased a shopping mall and opened several stores and a fast food restaurant. There were reports that the stores are fronts for illegal activity such as money laundering.
But several police raids of his stores failed to turn up any evidence of illegal activity.
