A Good Samaritan fought back against a shoplifter who tried to walk out with multiple handbags at a TJ Maxx store in California.

Video footage shows a TJ Maxx customer stepping up to stop a woman from shoplifting in Mira Loma, California on Sunday.

The footage shows two Black women wearing facemasks and hoodies walking out of the TJ Maxx loaded down with merchandise they didn’t pay for.

While one of the women walked out of the store with multiple handbags, a customer stopped the second woman from leaving.

The woman threw punches at the customer who managed to get her down on the floor as she yelled, “Let me go!”

She eventually got away empty-handed.

Here’s how a writer for The Root explained the encounter:

“He was appallingly violent to someone much smaller than him. Would the customer have reacted differently if the alleged shoplifter was white or a non-Black person of color? Based on the video, it looks like he was happy to have the chance to hit a Black woman since his reaction to her behavior was completely unwarranted.”

Actually, the video shows the woman throwing the first 2 punches at the customer.

The Root writer also objected to a local ABC news affiliate praising the customer as a “Good Samaritan.”

“Although news outlets have dubbed the man in the video as a ‘good samaritan,’ he is anything but. Not only was he not a T.J. Maxx employee, he was also much bigger than the woman he attacked. Quite frankly, the bystander shouldn’t have gotten involved at all.”

Bystanders are getting involved, since retailers refuse to hire security.

When shoplifters steal merchandise, retailers raise their prices which affects low-income consumers. Shoplifting hurts the economy and forces retailers to close stores in poor neighborhoods.

Customers in upscale neighborhoods don’t want their stores closed due to rampant theft.
