Oakland A’s announcer Glen Kuiper was suspended after he uttered an offensive racial slur during a live broadcast on Friday.

A spokesperson for NBC Sports California, which broadcasts A’s games, said Kuiper was suspended on Saturday while the incident is under review.

The incident occurred on Friday during the pregame of the Oakland A’s against Kansas City Royals baseball game at Kauffman Stadium.

Kuiper and his broadcast partner Dallas Braden discussed a visit he made to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in Kansas City on Saturday.

“We had a phenomenal day today,” Kuiper said. “Ni**er League Museum and Author Bryant’s Barbecue.”

Neither Kuiper nor Braden reacted when he said the n-word.

Kuiper later apologized on-air during the sixth inning.

“A little bit earlier in the show, I said something, didn’t come out quite the way I wanted it to. I just wanted to apologize if it sounded different than I meant it to be said. I just wanted to apologize for that.”

The A’s also issued a statement, saying:

“The language used by Glen Kuiper during today’s pregame broadcast is unacceptable. The Oakland Athletics do not condone such language. We are working to address the situation.”

But some skeptics suggest Kuiper’s use of the n-word was a Freudian slip, which means he was thinking of the n-word subconsciously when it slipped out.

Freudian slips reveal a person’s secret thoughts and dark feelings that they may wish to suppress.

Sports announcers have been fired in the past for uttering similar Freudian slips on-air.

Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, spoke of “forgiveness” in a statement late Saturday:

“I’m aware of the unfortunate slur made by Glen Kuiper. I welcomed Glen to the NLBM yesterday and know he was genuinely excited to be here. The words is painful and had not place in our society. And while I don’t pretend to know glen’s heart I do know that my heart is one of forgiveness. I hope all of you will find it in yourselves to do the same!”

Kuiper is the A’s longtime television announcer for the past 17 seasons.
