Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy say they will end their 19-year conservatorship over former NFL player Michael Oher, 37.
Oher, who is married with 4 children, was portrayed in the 2009 Oscar-winning movie “The Blind Side” about a Black boy who was adopted by a wealthy white couple and went on to play in the NFL.
The prominent Memphis couple will enter into a consent order to end their conservatorship, attorney Randall Fishman told reporters on Wednesday. Oher signed the conservatorship when he was an 18-year-old senior in high school.
Oher filed a petition in a Tennessee court on Monday, saying he believed the Tuohys were adopting him when he signed the paperwork.
He said the Tuohys lied to him nearly two decades ago. He wants a full accounting of assets they earned from his name and likeness following the release of “The Blind Side” and a book written about him.
Oher said he discovered in February 2023 that the conservatorship provided him no familial relationship to the Tuohys.
But the Tuohys’ attorneys said Oher knew that he had not been adopted. Fishman said Oher mentioned the Tuohys being conservators for him three times in his best-selling 2011 book “I Beat The Odds: From Homeless, To The Blind Side.”
The Tuohys said Oher threatened to plant negative stories about them in the press if they didn’t pay him $15 million.
Oher earned $34.5 million in 9 seasons in the NFL after “The Blind Side” premiered in 2009.
