2 women who escaped with their lives when cops shot up their truck during the massive Christopher Dorner manhunt won’t be getting a new vehicle.
Emma Hernandez, 71, and her daughter, Maggie Carranza, 47, were out delivering the LA Times newspapers when eight police officers opened fire on their truck after mistaking the women for Dorner, who was driving a different make and model truck.
Hernandez’s attorney, Glen Jonas, told NBC 4 in LA that the women changed their minds about accepting a replacement truck from the LAPD after they were told they had to pose for a photo op and pay taxes on the truck.
“You tried to murder the woman, now you’re telling her she can’t have a four-wheel drive, you’re telling her she can’t sell it and you’ve got to be taxed on it?” Jonas said. “How would anyone react to that?”
Jonas plans to file a lawsuit against the LAPD. He said the new truck, which is valued at $32,560, was being being offered as a “reward or prize” for their cooperation.
LAPD spokesperson, Commander Andrew Smith, told NBC 4 that the department “just can’t get past the 1099 issue,” referring to the tax form one must file to report additional income.
“The government has to take their bite out of it, I guess,” Smith said.
