Former New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez may have been involved in a double murder last Summer, the Boston Globe reports. Hernandez, 23, is being held without bond on first degree murder and weapons charges in the death of his friend Odin Lloyd, 27. Hernandez pleaded not guilty to the charges on Wednesday.

According to a report in the Boston Globe, Hernandez was involved in a fist fight at a Boston nightclub that ended in the shooting deaths of two men. Two law enforcement sources tell The Globe that Lloyd was executed because he had information about Hernandez’s involvement in the shootings.

Investigators believe a fight broke out at Cure, a club in the South End, between two men and a group that included Hernandez.

The two men, Daniel Abreu and Safiro Furtado, friends who grew up in Cape Verde, left the club with three other men in a BMW sedan in the early morning hours of July 16, 2012.

Abreu, who was driving, stopped at a traffic light on Shawmut Avenue, about to make a left onto Herald Street, when a silver or gray SUV with Rhode Island license plates pulled alongside the sedan. Someone from the SUV opened fire, killing Abreu, 29, and Furtado, 28.

The men who were with them survived the attack and the killings were left unsolved.

The officials said investigators now believe that Odin Lloyd, the man Hernandez is charged with killing in a North Attleborough industrial park June 17, may have had information about Hernandez’s role in the double slaying.

“The motive might have been that the victim knew [Hernandez] might have been involved,” one of the officials said.

The new revelations raised the specter that Hernandez might have been playing football games last season with the Patriots after he had participated in a double murder.

On Wednesday, Connecticut police detained Carlos A. Ortiz near Bristol, CT on a fugitive from justice warrant.

Ortiz, 23, is believed to be one of two men who was with Hernandez the night semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd was shot to death in an industrial park about a mile from Hernandez’s home. Ortiz is being held on $1.5 million bond. His charges have not been released.

Lloyd was shot multiple times in the arms, head and chest. His body was found dumped on a secluded gravel road in an industrial park near Hernandez’s home, police said.

Less than 2 hours after Hernandez’s arrest on Wednesday, the Patriots cut the heavily tattooed tight end from their roster. Hernandez signed a five-year $40 million contract with the Patriots last Summer, even though the Patriots were aware of his multiple failed urine drug tests at the University of Florida.
