Janelle Monáe adresses lesbian rumors in an interview with Pride Source. The rumors caught fire when Janelle dropped subtle hints on her new album Electric Lady, in stores now.
On her single “Q.U.E.E.N.” Janelle sings “Am I a freak because I love watching Mary?” and “Hey sister am I good enough for your heaven?” In the song “Givin Em What They Love,” Janelle teased her lesbian fans by singing about having “Undercover love” with a sexy woman.
But when asked directly about the lesbian rumors, Janelle said coyly, “I actually have never heard that.”
She continued: “This is the first time I’m hearing it. But I will say that a lot of my work always comes from an authoritative stance, so it may not be about me; it may just be about a story, or something that I’ve witnessed, or my imagination. You just never know.”
In an interview in 2011 Janelle said she only dated Androids. “You can compare it to being a lesbian or being a gay man or being a black woman. What I want is for people who feel oppressed or feel like the ‘other’ to connect with the music and to feel like, ‘She represents who I am.'”
Janelle added that she would address the lesbian rumors “in due time.”
If you’re in Atlanta, Janelle is coming to the Tabernacle on November 28. Click here to purchase tickets.
