Rev. Al Sharpton Protests Plaxico Burress’ ‘Unfair’ Sentence

Former NY Giants WR Plaxico Burress’s name will be replaced with a number now that he’s in the system for the next two years.

After hearing his sentence in a Manhattan courtroom, Burress was immediately taken into custody. He tenderly kissed his pregnant wife and young son goodbye and hugged his tearful parents as he was led out of the courtroom.
The star receiver was transported to Riker’s Island for processing. According to TMZ.com, the star athlete ate alone in his cell last night. He dined on hot dogs, beans, whole wheat bread and fruit. For breakfast he’ll get fruit, grits, whole wheat bread and his choice of coffee or tea. Then, later today, he will be transferred to Fishkill Correctional Facility in upstate New York where he will serve out his sentence.
Burress was convicted on a weapon charge after a gun that he illegally concealed in his waistband discharged wounding him in his thigh last November. The accident occurred inside a crowded NY nightclub. The police weren’t notified until Burress sought treatment for his injury at a local hospital.
Of course, the very Reverend Al Sharpton had something to say about yet another black athlete getting the shaft (so to speak). According to TMZ.com, Sharpton is coming out swinging against Plaxico Burress’ 2-year prison sentence — claiming Plax’s punishment is “way out of proportion with the crime.”
“I think it is an unusually harsh sentence for someone who was his own victim. He should be punished but his sentence is way out of proportion with the crime.
Celebrities should not be given special treatment but they should not be given exceptional punishments either.” Read more…

Hello All. Just like Vick got unnecessary time, so does Plaxico. The injustice in this country! How did comedian Paul Mooney put it: They got their ni@@er wake-up call!
next time, his dumb *ss should get a license, put the safety on, and make sure there are no bullets in the chamber. PAHairson, Mooney was dead-on about this one.
so unfair…2 years he hurt no one but his self.. wow.
lesson learned. as he cries in his cell i hope he realizes that his actions were dumb and dumber. it definitely is a n!gger wake up call and also i hope these rich fools learn that they’re not invisible, they can serve time just like a broke man.
i agree with al!
I didnt know his wife was prg.

I didn’t either and it just makes it more sad. Two kids being without their father for 2 yrs, and they wonder why the demise of the black household keeps increasing. They keep putting black men in jail for stupid stuff. What happend to probation and/or counseling?
The sentence is unfair…it is unfair that the minimum sentence in New York State for gun possession is 3 1/2 years of which a convicted person must serve at least 85 % before being eligible for parole and this football player only got 2 years.
A friend of mine, a guy who has never gotten arrested before, doesn’t do drugs and does not drink alcohol, recently got sentenced for gun possession. The judge gave him the very minimum under the law.
f*ck Plaxico and Al Sharpton
Would we still feel the same if he shot someone other than himself?
@Yvonne if he shot someone else then it wouldn’t be an issue he would be doing way more than 2yrs. The law is the law he lives in NY and Ice said they make it very well known a gun charge is a one way ticket to the big house so while personally I may feel its to harsh if thats what the law says then he has to do his time. I think everybody w/ a gun should follow any and all laws to avoid innocent ppl getting hurt or killed.

Of course not, but didn’t he have past issues?
of course*
@Anna no he did not that I know of this was his 1st offense somebody correct me if I am wrong.
I know this is a little petty, but, I have to correct a sentence in this story. I went to high school with Plex and his mother died some years ago, unfortunately. So, the “tearful parents” must have been some other family members. I just had to correct that.
can this bs be appealed, or because the mayor???? wanted to go after him, it’s a done deal? two years for shooting himself in the leg, and a medical bill too? and the Giants let him go 4 months after the shooting happened?
even T.I. got one year. i know, different states, different laws and penalties. man.

He had moving violations and a couple of domestic disputes charges that were later dropped. He likes to drive with out auto insurance, updated plates and registration and likes tinted windows, which is a no no in many states.
Dayum he wont even get to see the birth of his daughter, I feel bad for the kiddies!!!
@JS yes his mother sure did die thats why he was crying after the superbowl bless his heart
STAY YO AZZ OUT OF THE CLUB AND AT HOME WITH YOUR WIFE AND KIDS AND YOU WOULDN’T HAVE PROBLEMS LIKE THESE
AT LEAST KNOW HIS WIFE DOESN’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT WHERE HE IS AND WHAT HE’S DOING
HARSH BUT TRUE-NICCAS NEED TO DO BETTER SERIOUSLY
HOW CAN YOU HAVE A FEAST BEFORE YOU-WIFE, KIDS, MONEY AND DO SOME DUMB SHIAT LIKE THIS
HIS ARSE SHOULD BE LOCKED UP BASED SOLELY ON THE FACT THAT HE’S STUPID!
adding on to mocha and stop fronting for other people b/c when you going down no one else will be there.
Harsh is what folks may think, but the law is the freaking law. Doesn’t matter if he only shot his dumb self – the laws in that state are strict and if you don’t want to risk going to jail, don’t carry around a fire arm that you do not have a concealed license for. And if you do, don’t be dumb enough to get caught with it.
Sick of high-profile folks breaking the law and the idea that I’m supposed to feel sorry for their stupidity.
What a dumb azz!!! If he were at home with his wife and child/children instead of a club, he would be at football practice right about now. SMDH
I bet his wife is secretly happy he got the bid although I’m sure she would have hoped it was a shorter one. No wife wants her husband hanging out at the club especially when he feels he needs to be packing while he’s out. As for the sentence, I think it’s harsh and I hope he can get it reduced somehow.
anna is correct that plax had some prior minor issues in which the police were involved so i wasn’t surprised to hear about this. you just can’t save some people from themselves, a la O.J.
i also don’t believe his story about what happened although i do believe that he wasn’t trying to harm anyone. obviously, he is a danger around a firearm.
if athletes and celebrities are this dumb, i should open a consulting business to make sure they have all of their proper permits and registrations.
