Bishop Eddie Long: ‘I Am Going to Vigorously Fight’ Sex Charges
Bishop Eddie Long, the embattled pastor of New Birth Missionary Church, addressed the growing church sex scandal that threatens to bring down his empire during a roisterous sermon this morning.
“The Bishop,” as he referred to himself, welcomed his church family and “all our other guests.”
“New Birth, we are not alone,” he told his congregation. “We must not forget our strength is not in man — it’s not in Eddie Long — but in the Lord!”
“For the sake of our visitors here today, we’re here every Sunday at 8 and 11,” he said to another round of applause.
Long then thanked his long suffering wife and their four grown children for their strength and support.
“I have never, ever portrayed myself as perfect, but I am not the person that they are portraying in the media! I’m not that. I’m not that,” he said.
“Out of advice of my lawyers… I am not gonna allow myself to be drawn into the court of public opinion. Because one day every knee got to bow, and every tongue got to confess, and everybody’s gotta give an account for themselves!,” he said. “I only, and my only hope is, is in the hands of the Lord, and my justice is to be given to me in a fair court of justice,” he stammered.
“As you know there have been accusations and attacks made against me, and I am going to vigorously fight all of ‘em!,” he told the parishioners as they stood and cheered. “I feel like Goliath — David, rather — facing Goliath. There’s a giant in front of me. But I am going to fight, and I’m gonna fight vigorously! And I got five rocks and I haven’t thrown one yet!,” said Long as he lay down his mic and strode off the podium to thunderous applause.
Not once did he deny the charges in lawsuits brought against him by 4 former Longfellow Academy students who accuse Long of coercion by plying them with cash, cars, gifts and exotic trips in return for sex..
Afterwards, Long held a press conference but he didn’t take any questions from the media.
The bishop’s long suffering wife, Vanessa Long, accompanied him to the pulpit.

There are so many that are quick to judge. I wasn’t there when he allegedly committed these acts and neither was anyone else besides the “victims” and God. So if he did he will have to answer to God.

yes, people will continue to follow him. nothing is going to happen to his ministry. yeah there may be a few folks that roll out but it won’t be in droves. WE as a people are very forgiving so IF he did something not so right, he will be forgiven by the masses. i have been commenting on this all weekend. it’s a sad state of affairs it really is! but he has a cult like following, i saw that by the brief clips i saw of how he was received by his congregation this morning. this man could be a serial killer and they still would follow him! wow… that’s a lot of power to give to a flesh and blood human being!

Sandra how are you? As you know I am now in Canada 3 years now. I have only been to New Birth once. For Sunday and could never return there. Both Eddie Long and Dollar’s churches are social clubs to go network, meet celebs and take pics and that’s exactly what I saw there. The man is possibly gay on the down low and so are many of these worshippers. Listen Sandra, I hear ATL is a modern day Babylon now. What the HELL????????? Is going on there??? Sodom and Gommorah zip codes everywhere! Even Usher is GAY! They all look gay to me. Trey Songz etc.

I see people on their Iphones and blackberrys when its time for scripture in church. I visit a church some Sun when I dont feel like driving to my church and I noticed the Pastor started using an Ipad as well as his bible a few wks back.
I am still netural but believe something inappropriate happened I am just not sure to what extent.

Bishop said he was innocent in his own way when he said I am not that man BUT even if he said I am INNOCENT that doesnt mean that he is. Ted Haggard said he was innocent when he was hit with his homosexual scandel then later confessed #justsaying. I think people would have something to say regardless of what he stood up and said today.

THE CHURCH has become a BUSINESS, and people are not folowing the word instead they are following THE MAN.
My sister says she doesn’t follow the minister she follows his message. I, on the other hand, am skeptical about the message coming from some who doesn’t seem honest and trustworthy. HOW many churches are there on one block? How many denominations have come forth? There are false prophets out there and people need to open their eyes and ears.
I don’t see a need to dress up in an expensive suit-with matching alligator shoes to go with the outfit-FOR A PREACHER TO DELIVER THE WORD of GOD. There are broke people paying tithes to churches such as Mr. Long’s and the money is going right into pockets and lavish life styles.
Eddie Long, from what I’ve seen because I don’t know him, has become AN IMAGE. He is well put together on Sundays, but is all that necessary to deliver a message…I mean an IPAD?????….come on!.
For me, the # 1 clue to a person’s guilt is when they don’t deny it. Because of his “celebrity” status he can hide behind the “my attorney’s advised” blah blah blah bull shizzzzzzz. When the allegations first surfaced anyone who is 100% innocent would have been screaming it from the roof tops over/through attorneys and all; particularly because of the type of allegations. Instead he’s been coming up with a game plan and or strategy and those are not the actions of an innocent man. Even with the 4 accusers and the photos Long will always have supporters who will rationalize it all away; human nature. Lastly, Bernstein is not an amateur and her releasing the photos was her way of saying “I am not blowing smoke.” I have a feeling that the text messages and emails will be more damning than the photos.
That church building needs to be destroyed. That building is dedicated to baphomet, hence the baphomet hidden logo that is supposed to be the church logo.
And if any anyone of those boys just happen to have a freak accident like committing suicide, or overdosing on some drugs, I will definitely know that he had them killed.
The look in his eyes is one of betrayal and defeat imo. He looks as if he never imagined people turning against him. But if innocent I can’t imagine his legal team saying don’t proclaim your innocence. You can do that without giving up any details. He should’ve have gave this speech (cause it was not a semon and I can only hope that an actual one was given today) and stepped down. It may have caused him to look guilty but he cannot guide, teach and tend to church business with this over his head. He should’ve announced that he will be allowing Minister XYZ to take over his leadership duties while he battles this in court and most would’ve thought nothing of his decision. To not do so is prideful and selfish to his members who don’t deserve to be subjected to a media circus each Sunday
As far as the iPad many preachers and churches embrace technology. Sermons are written in advance so I see nothing wrong with that. He could’ve typed his sermon and uploaded it to his iPad before service. Its actually more convenient for editing than standard pen and paper plus there are a lot of biblical and religious apps. I have the bible on my phone and if I forget my bible at home I will whip my phone out in a second to read passages and take notes.
that’s just a sign of the times and not a big deal imo… every preacher has notes at the pulpit, this is no different.

This is just sad. It’s also sad that ONE PASTOR can turn away people from God. Just because MAN let you down doesn’t mean GOD will let you down. Don’t put all pastors into one category. I know many pastors, my grandfather being one of them that doesn’t take money from the church. Most pastors get a salary my grandfather doesn’t because this is something he loves to do and he wants to get Gods word out. The ipad didn’t bother me either, I use my G1 for my bible and I know my uncle uses his iphone.

Not all pastors use Ipad and Iphone though. My grandpa is old school he uses his bible and hand written notes. Lol. It is common for the “younger” pastors to use the new technology.

I’m sure somewhere in the various threads about this tragedy, someone has brought this up so forgive me for repeating. This whole incident makes me think that as parents, we have to be on our P’s and Q’s regarding our children. Didn’t any of these parents have red flags and bells and whistles going off all over the place when these boys were receiving expensive gifts and taking trips with a man alone in other countries. Something stinks about this whole situation. I’m not trying to blame the parents of the boys, but it seems we need to keep our eyes OPEN for suspicious activities. Better yet, it almost makes you not want to trust anyone even men/women of the cloth. SMH.

As for my comment about the iPad, I too have seen pastos refer to the them at the pulpit, just not walk around with and/or preach from it. Diff’rent strokes for diffrent folks, I guess, it just put me off a little. The whole situation is messy as hell and I understand that he doesnt owe an explanation or does he? I thought that we were all accountable for our actions. I also believe that if it true,more ppl knew,a person in his position would have help to cover such a scandal…guess time will tell.

@Intense – the issue to me is he was in a position of power. These boys (children or young men, whichever you prefer. Personally, even though in GA 16 is the age of consent, they are still children to me and whether they gave their consent or not, a pastor – a married one at that – should not be engaging in these kinds of activities). They were under his teaching. Whether they agreed or not isn’t the issue per se. Like I mentioned several days ago – abuse between teachers/students – even if students are old enough to “know better,” or between parents/children – men who molest their children even though the child is “of age” and so and and so forth use their positions to manipulate their victims. Even grown people can be dupped.
I mean, if their parents didn’t see something was wrong, why would they? They probably got caught up in the money, bright lights, etc. – you know those things that draw so many of us in.
That’s how I see it, but I respect other people’s opinions.

@Intense I hear where you are coming from and I am on the fence regarding that aspect of the case. On one hand Bishop started the relationship with these young men when they are 14-15 I believe he was building their trust or what have you and he knew the law and made sure he could NOT be charged with any criminal charges. I do feel that there is a difference between the young men in this age group vs the young boys the Priest have been accused of molesting. I believe in his position of power he may have used it for evil if you will and the young men claim they are not gay (I know I know I know). I dont think they are being messy because IF the accusations are TRUE then it could STOP other victims from being abused/used/caught up etc. As far as them traveling with him alot of churches take kids on missions trips or travel I know my church does but we are more worried about the teens having sex with each other vs one of the leaders messing with a child.
There are so many unanswered questions surronding this case I can’t call it but I wont turn on the alleged victims just yet either.

I don’t want to see the new pictures but I just read on cnn that during the sermon he compared this to natural disasters including Katrina… in my eyes that’s going too far. Let’s say he was just too friendly with these boys, a man in his position should know better than to put himself out there like that. I’m not famous nor do I hold a position of power, but I don’t allow myself to share a room with young people unsupervised, nor do I send pictures of myself to youth or anything of that nature. The mothers were likely blinded by the fact that this man wanted to take on a fatherly role in their sons lives and accepted it without question. For the boys this was likely a once in a lifetime opportunity with the gifts, the trips and the tuition. Criminal charges can not be filed without a crime and since these boys were over the age of consent no crime has been committed (unless he was writing the gifts,payments,cars and trips off as charity which may be why BJ said she will be alerting the feds). My old pastor set up the church office with female relatives so that there is always a witness to his meetings and who comes and goes to avoid rumors and allegations about his behavior. When I met with my new pastor he made sure his wife was present, I can’t imagine that a man in Eddies position did not know to always cover himself for protection… that makes me raise eyebrows at him even if he is innocent, he allowed this to happen. Where was his wife while all this was going on? Most first ladys travel with their husbands and his kids are and were old enough to be without their parents for a few days. There’s just so many questions here and the information out now is too damaging for him to say basically nothing towards his defense. He is protecting himself from being called a liar in the end or from contradicting himself later
Don’t you guys think BEL should step down? Personally, my opinion only, I think for the sake of the church and all those affected by this scandal, he SHOULD step down until his innocence is proven.
In many churches, they have a board, and that board runs the show so to speak. I guess that’s not how NB works, huh. I just couldn’t sit under a pastor under these kinds of allegations unless I KNEW he wasn’t guilty, but that’s just me. I guess people have to follow their own heart.

Most male counselors, in churches I’ve attended ALWAYS, have another person in the counseling room if they are counseling someone from the opposite sex for the very reason you mentioned.
@mseverything Bishop Long and his wife are always traveling all over the US and world serving/preaching etc so I am sure she was doing her thing and he was doing his. I believe the trips these young men went on with him were part of a boys mentoring program so I doubt she attended. He has helped so many people him doing for these young (so they have said) more than likely didnt raise an eyebrow for her. For all we know they could have a marriage in name and apperance only you never know

@Elove in my experience they write them down in order to have a guideline, topic to follow and stay on track to as well as to make sure they have the correct verses written down to refer back too and to stay within time constraints. Most pastors i know have a tendency to deviate from the script but still have their noted to get them back on track so while it may be written in advance they are still speaking from the heart. Plus pastors often recycle sermons (holiday ones and ones that particularly speak to people) and if they aren’t written down they can’t refer to them later. Because they’re from the heart no two sermons will be exactly the same but the basic idea, scripture, titles and what not will be. Not to mention those churches that use visual aides like powerpoint or have the main scriptures used written down in the program need their notes written in advance so that they can have those things complete before service. A sermon is a speech and all speechwriters and givers will admit to writing those things in advance. I respect your opinion but growing up with a pastor grandmother and growing up in the church I’ve seen how they work. It doesn’t take away from the message in my eyes though. You also have to remember that some ministers publish their sermons or distribute them for further study, share them with fellow ministers and things of that nature so they must be written in advance. Junior ministers also must typically have their sermon approved by the senior pastor before giving a sermon for the first time. Church services are spirit led but still should be professional in nature and essence and being prepared in that matter allows for that.
I just got so disturbed on another site reading how many people were saying they would never go to another church because of scandals like this, trying to tell believers that they were stupid and followers, sheep for believing in the bible and saying that all Christians aren’t to be trusted because of things like this and titheing. This entire situation affects so many outside of New Birth and its really a shame… the devil is at work turning people away from the body of Christ due to this and I’m really praying that people are able to see through the propaganda and realize that Eddie does not reflect the millione of Christians striving to live life according to Gods will. All of this could’ve been avoided had those who were deceived known the bible for themselves

at the Jeri curl wig Eddie Longstoke is rocking. In an interview that came out in 07 Eddie Long declared he was the head of his church. He bragged about that and said he wasn’t tied to a church board and makes all the decisions. IMO that’s too much power without having to answer to someone. If this scandal doesn’t bankrupt him or New Birth I bet it will change the dynamics of who is in charge and making decisions.

@Daisy, my pastor asked us to read between the lines and said after prayerfully considering, talking to and being advised by church leadership in the US & reevaluating certain situations he (as a board member for a Pentecostal Christian association here) has severed certain relationships in the United States. All member churches of the association took the same stance here in Nigeria.

My pastor uses an IPAD now, which is much better than the bulky laptop he used to balance on the pulpit. He doesn’t walk around with it though and uses a bible when he’s reading verses. I don’t see anything wrong with integrating new technology in the church. I quite like the multimedia visuals used to illustrate a particular point in the sermon. The way some people are reacting you’d think it was called a “devil’s pad” or “mark of the beast tablet”

Karaz the pastor of the church I went to didn’t specifically mention it but he preached the importance of reading your bible for yourself and making sure you know the word so that you can see through darkness and falsehoods as well as mentioned how the bible tells us about the false prophets and churches.

Generally, I don’t like to speculate about cases until all the evidence is presented. In watching this sermon/press conference yesterday, I couldn’t help but feel something just isn’t right. Maybe he didn’t do something sexually with all of these four boys however some inappropriate behavior (which he in a sense admitted to by placing that disclaimer about him not being perfect) or conduct unbecoming of a bishop did in fact take place. Although the Bishop states “he is under attack” and he is not the man the media is trying to protray, there HAS to be some truth to these statements. I simply cannot see four heterosexual men claiming they participated in homosexual acts with a bishop for the sake of extortion and/or fame. Regardless of the outcome, if Bishop’s found guilty or not guilty, I will continue to pray for him and his family, the victims and their families as well as the others who are directly impacted by this scandal. I couldn’t wish this situation on my worst enemy.
Oh and
on your comments… I think the iPad issue is just looking for something to find fault in or from those who maybe see it as an extravagance. Well be seeing more iPads, laptops and things of that nature as more younger pastors lead churches. Or perhaps when the notes are handwritten they aren’t as obvious so people don’t realize the pastor has notes at the pulpit but this way is obvious

It’s just sooo many unanswered questions with him. I normally watch his ministry on Sunday nights at 8:30 on TBN and I turned to it to see if they would broadcast his sermons and they did. They showed his 23rd anniversary clips and showcased everything he and the New Birth family do for the community. My girlfriend said that due to contractual constraints TBN probably wouldn’t pull showing his ministry sermons unless the situation grows worse and/or he’s proven to be guilty of the charges.

In my opinion, the young men WERE/ARE VICTIMS!!!! They were teenagers when this all began and while they may have been misguided and confused about things, (and I wonder why) they were indeed VICTIMS! Eddie Long is a grown azzzzzz man and I don’t care if one of the young men said “I will do this or I will do that for you if you give me this or give me that.” Granted, the reasons for them coming forward now could very well be out of spite but again that is irrelevant. The stealing and what not is irrelevant and has nothing to do with the price of tea in China because Long is/was the adult; instead Long took advantage of their immaturity, confusion and their longing for a father figure; PERIOD! This is about HIS actions as not just an adult but as a pastor who is in a position of great authority; still susceptible to sin, but one who is looked up to and trusted by so many. Pastors are still sinners; no doubt and are imperfect; no doubt but when they choose that path they know it comes with a greater responsibility. Is it fair? I don’t know but it is what it is.

Bishop long knows that this situation is getting out of control.This is not the first time these allegations have been made against him. I myself have had men of the cloth come on to me and make sexual advances…thank God those men weren’t from my church but who’s to say they don’t exist there. I agree with Bishop Long when he says that man’s faith shouldnt be placed in him. In the Bible it says that if you place your ultimate faith in man you are bound to failed…God expects your faith to be completely in him and maybe thats the lesson he’s trying to teach the members of new birth. Anything that is not of God in the church is supposed to be removed by the pastor…that is written…man shoulnt become so puffed up that they for get the initial design of the church.
