When Twitter Goes Horribly Wrong: Keri Hilson cracks tasteless Amy Winehouse joke

Singer/songwriter Keri Hilson offended and upset her 1.4 million Twitter.com followers yesterday when she displayed amazing insensitivity about the passing of British chanteuse Amy Winehouse.

On July 23 — the day Winehouse died of a drug overdose — Hilson tweeted:

Shocked Winehouse fans took offense at the words “self destructive state.” Even though it was true, they thought it was too soon.

Then last night, the singer tweeted a pic of herself posing with a drag queen along with the caption:

*gasp* Amy Winehouse resurrected to party w/ me!!!

Winehouse’s fans, who were still in mourning, didn’t find the joke funny at all. They accused Hilson of pulling a stunt by using Winehouse’s untimely death to draw attention to herself.

Keri tried to clean it up a few moments later by tweeting:

But the damage had already been done. Fans of Winehouse let Hilson have it in a deluge of angry tweets last night on the social networking website.

Do you get tired of celebrities acting out on Twitter like overgrown children with no impulse control?

Hell yeah I get tired of celebrities and adults alike acting like overgrown children on twitter, facebook and in LIFE! People need to think about what they say before they say it because when they don’t, the tend to spend their entire life apologizing for some chit they meant to say in the first place. And if you have thought about the dumb, insensitive chit you say before you say it, quit apologizing. You meant to say it! I can respect an insensitive jerk that does not back down from how they feel more than I can respect a jerk who meant to say the chit they said but then apologize because it may ruin their career. I cannot stand a backpeddler!

I don’t feel she was being deliberate and I do believe in freedom of speech, but what pisses me off is how people say what they mean, mean what they say (whether it be some dumb chit or not) and then apologize backwards and forwards. My Saturday consisted of me doing a 3 mile run at 630 AM (hopped up out of bed and got my run on – LITERALLY), clean car (vaccuumed @ home – saved a dolla), bank, oil change, take mama’nem to a fune, car wash, pick daughter up from a sleepover and crashed at my nieces….ALL BEFORE 1230! @ Chib, I really appreciate your post today because in my opinion, you keep making my point! The same people who tend to argue about “freedom of speech” are the same people who get upset when someone flex’s THEIR freedom of speech by voicing their freedom of disagreeing with what that person said in the first place. If your so big on one having freedom of speech, then surely you can be big on someone disagreeing AND USING THEIR FREEDOM OF SPEECH to show their disproval of one’s statement!

It’s sad really how people want feel what they say should be covered by freedom of speech, but when someone verbally disagree with that person, then they don’t expect that person to use theirs!

hate when I’m forced to defend artists I dont care about. I dont see anything wrong with what Keri tweeted, including the pic. She was just stating the obvious. The person did look like Amy.

As for too soon with the comment…truth is truth, be it today or 2 years from now. I’m a firm believer in speaking how u feel. She wasn’t talking sideways. Keri just spoke what the entire world has said one time or another, and have been thinking forever.

It’s unfortunate Amy passed, but come on, were any of us surprised or delayed our day when we heard? Life went on for everyone.

Everyone and their mama cracked jokes about Amy when she was alive just like they did Michael Jackson and the minute they hear the news about them passing all of a sudden they’re loved and adored by fans across the globe.
