Hope springs eternal for single women who had their eye on Newark Mayor Cory Booker but weren't sure about his sexual proclivities.
A recently unearthed article from Booker's college days reveals that the aspiring senator once hated gays with a passion.
Booker was supposedly in his "tolerance stage," when he wrote:
"I stopped telling my gay jokes. Fags, flamers and dykes became homosexuals and people of differing sexual orientation and, of course, I had my gay friend." But: "I was disgusted by gays. The thought of two men kissing each other was about as appealing as a frontal lobotomy."
He added: "Allow me to be more direct, escaping the euphemisms of my past — I hated gays. The disgust and latent hostility I felt toward gays were subcategories of hatred, plain and simple."
Booker's self-cleansing column seems to dispute rumors that he is a closeted homosexual. Is it possible for a man to be virulently homophobic and still be gay? One published study suggests that it is within the realm of possibility.
The study, which analyzed four separate experiments conducted in the US and Germany, provides empirical evidence to suggest that in some individuals homophobia is the external manifestation of repressed sexual desires they feel towards their own gender.
[bold emphasis mine]
It was a gay counselor who helped Booker to come to terms with his hatred for gays.
"...it didn't take me long to realize that the root of my hatred did not lie with gays but with myself. It was my problem. A problem I dealt with by ceasing to tolerate gays and instead seeking to embrace them."
But if Mr. Booker is not gay, what is he? How could Booker be a straight man with no apparent history of dating women? Maybe he hates women just as passionately as he once hated the gays?
