How would you react if you met your idol for the first time? You would probably freak out like Janelle Monaé did when she met her idol Janet Jackson for the first time.

Janelle, 33, shared a video of herself preparing to meet the 53-year-old music icon at her induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Ceremony in March.

In the video, Janelle, who is dressed as Janet from her Rhythm Nation era, begs her entourage to tell her what to say to Miss Jackson.

She nervously practices her greeting in a mirror.

"Oh my gosh! Okay, what am I gonna say? You know what? Don't talk a lot, but make the words count. I'm just gonna be like [looks at herself in a mirror], I love you. You changed my life forever... I don't know what the f*ck I'ma say!"

Question: how did you react the first time you met your favorite celebrity?

When I met Oprah she said, "I forgot what floor I'm going to - do you mind hitting 22 for me? I THINK I'm going to 22.."
I said, "I don't work for you, Oprah Winfrey!" she looked shocked and a man she was with walked toward the buttons to hit it for her and I finally cracked and said, "I'm just playin'..." and we laughed.

I met Oprah, after 911 in New York outside of the Sheraton Hotel, I was with one of my YT coworkers, I was so excited, I said "I love u Oprah, and she said "I love you too" and blew me a kiss. My YT coworker was like "why are you so excited" ME: mind your business!

  • Dollface

I just LOVE MY FAMILY!!!! She is just so beautiful it's ridiculous.

I acted a damn fool when I met James Brown and was way to young to even know his history or his music. But I went crazy none the less. I just kept screaming. I would tell myself to shut up and stop that, and then a scream would come upon me again.

We were in a ice cream shop and I was in the back (it was pretty empty maybe like 8-9 people) but I was in the back and just kept screaming. I was like ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. stop........ ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh..... stop.... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh... stop.

I kept doing it so much that he walked back there and said "hey how are you doing.. you're a cute girl" Then he jiggled both my tits and said "you have some nice size tits" and I went ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh....

My boyfriend's mom was fuming. She was so mad that he grabbed my tits. I was only like 18-19 at the time.

Wow! still no excuse, but I hope this was during his crack head Phase! SMH.

  • Chicagowise

    I met two idols.

I was 14 years old when I met Prince.

My favorite uncle was a photojournalist who frequently covered musicians. In 1982, he was assigned to cover Prince's Chicago leg of the 1999 tour.

Initially, Prince wasn't very friendly, but when my uncle told Prince that I played piano and guitar, Prince looked at me... squinted his eyes... and said, "what kind of piano do you have?" I told him my parents have a Steinway. Prince smirked as if he was impressed. My uncle asked Prince to autograph a photo for me and Prince signed it, "Practice makes perfection, Prince," and then he walked away.

When I took the picture to school, my friends accused me of faking Prince's autograph, because his handwriting was "too pretty." Years later, when known samples of Prince's penmanship were publicly accessible, my friends apologized.

I met Sammy Davis Jr. when I was 17. I had a part time job working at the Arie Crown Theater. At the time, I wanted to be a singer and I was convinced working there would help break into the business.

The night Sammy performed, I was switched from working as an usher to working the greenroom, where the celebrities hangout before, during, and after the show. My supervisor warned me not to speak to Sammy or eat any of the food provided for Sammy and his entourage.

When Sammy walked in, he greeted me with a big hello and vigorous handshake! Then, he kept insisting I have something to eat. I explained that management forbade me to touch his food.

Later that evening, after the show, when I was on my way home, Sammy sent a limo to the back exit, and instructed the driver to take me and a coworker home!

Sammy was a very friendly, sincere, and generous man. Prince could be equally generous, but he wasn't very friendly with strangers.

This is not a celeb I met..this is an "almost met..."
Years ago, I was catching a flight at LAX. Just as I was walking up the sidewalk to go in..I see the actor Leon, stepping out of a limo & talking on the phone. (This was at a time when I was a RABID Leon fan, I mean I was obsessed!!)
Anyway, I straightened my back, sprayed breath spray in my mouth, re-applied my lipstick..and started to sashay towards him.
I got close enough to speak, & had started to extend my hand, when I heard him yell into the phone Muthf*ker you heard me, I'm tired of this bullsh*t, y'all gonna learn to stop playing with me!!!"
Chile...I politely retracted my hand and kept walking. ??

Poor Devin, When he finished his last song I pulled him off stage and Told him how much of a fan I was and How his music was everything to me. I asked for a photo and Even tho he looked scared, He said yeah! We ended up taking like 5 different photos and He also had Rob Quest & Jugg Mugg with him, The original Coughee Brothaz trio... I was so damn star struck, I grew up on their music and It truly was an awesome experience. I took a few photos with each member and Only one of Me, Rob and Jugg w/his hoe!

  • Thee Jaguar Doll

Oooh, Leon Robinson is fiiiine! Even as he ages. But I'm sure that would have been awkward as hell w/ him catching an attitude with whoever on the phone! Oooh, What if he was Cynthia Bailey on the phone with him... I would of asked to put it on speaker so I can say hi!

  • keviethedreamer

I’ve actually met a lot of celebrities, including Oprah, but I’ve never been starstuck to the point that I’m left speechless. They’re just people too. The first celebrity I met and the most memorable experience for me was when I first met Amerie. She was my absolute favorite singer growing up. I had a huge crush on her and went to a club appearance she had in DC in 2014. I was 24 years old. She was so sweet, humble, and very down to Earth. ? I have the chance to meet Janet Jackson at one of her Metamorphosis shows in Las Vegas this summer in August for my birthday. Now I will say I am a little nervous for that, lol.

  • Lady_Elle

    That's a good one! rofl

  • Chicagowise

It was surreal. Afterwards, I kept thinking, "did that just happen?" Later in life, I had online interactions with him that weren't very pleasant, but I will always respect his talent and legacy.

  • Tee Tee

I've seen celebs and walked right pass them?????

  • Dr. C

I'm a musician in an orchestra (violinist) and I have played with quite a few famous people. Natalie Cole was by far the nastiest person I ever encountered. She treated us like the help. I never looked at her the same. Gregory Hines was a sweetheart. Tony Bennett is one of the nicest people alive. Seriously. An absolute gem. Also performed with Wynton Marsalis. He was lovely, too.

I met alot of celebs driving a taxi and working at a hotel for all those years. I had plenty of opportunities to be included in many circles. Suffering from mental health issues i had the ability to blend and to fit in. But dealing with issues i blew them off.

  • Satin Panther

I seen Merlin Santana back in 2000 at this popular pizza & wings spot near Six Flags in NJ. I was only like 13-14 at the time but damn he was sexy had on jeans, a wife beater with a bullets tattoo wrapped around his arm. He was with some young raggedy haired chick that I assume was probably a lil cousin or sister or something but I could tell he was frustrated at something and had a attitude so I didn't say chit to him, but just stared! My mom and I was eating in the car and we seen him drove off in a black Beamer. Damn I'm mad I missed my chance I should of said Hey! or Hi or something, he knew I recognized him but I didn't want to get cursed out or some chit and then he gets murdered 2 yrs later...smh R.I.P

I met Grace Jones in Ocho Rios Jamaica on a boat and even shared some of my Appleton Rum ith her she was down to earth and was personable..she is the chit!!!

I tried to say Hi to Foxy Brown when she performed at a hood dangerous azz club when her album Broken Silence came out, she was acting stank and stuck up but her brothers was cool as fluck and was walking around the club chilling!!! And she had her bodyguards make all the bitchez leave the bathroom so she can use it, but I still love her music tho.

I saw Maino fine azz in New York Courthouse..LOL..I was like hold up thats Maino??? He is tall in person like 6'1 or 6'2 and looks better in person too, never knew he was fine like that!

  • Shenanigans1

    Janet looks horrible

  • Chicagowise

Depending on the situation and Prince's mood, he could be downright charming or a total jackass. When I encountered him at 14, it was backstage. Initially, he seemed irritated by my presence. That is, until my uncle told him I was a young musician.

Toward the end of Prince's life, he was extremely paranoid. I know someone who worked with Prince, off and on, for years. Despite their history, Prince tried to force him to put his cell phone in the trunk of his OWN car, because Prince thought he might secretly record him.

I haven't been to Paisley since he died. I had tickets to The Revolution concert after Prince died, but I stayed home, because I didn't want to cry in front of strangers. It was too soon.

  • Chicagowise

I just remembered! I met Missy Elliot at The Water Tower in Chicago. It was in 1997, some time after the release of her Supa Dupa Fly album.

She was coming down an escalator with three other women. The woman standing next to Missy was extremely feminine and very attractive. The other two women were similarly paired: one super feminine and the other, not so much.

At first, I couldn't place Missy's face, but I knew I recognized her. When she was about to pass me by, I said, "Hey! I know you from somewhere." Missy just stood there, smiling.

When we flashed her pearly whites, I recognized her, instantly. Then I said, "Hey, Missy! Girl, what are you doing here?!"

I don't know if Missy thought I was crazy, but she laughing her ass off at me. Inthink my familiar tone shocked her, because I approached like a long lost friend.

I think Missy said, was visiting friends or something like that. Our exchange lasted about three minutes and it was over. I didn't ask for an autograph.

In the 80s, and then again, in the 90s, I had several run ins with Oprah.

  • NewNew

Do NOT come for Janet. Just don't. Hateful azz people.

    Love you Janet!! ???????????

  • NewNew

I'm planning to see her in September. First time I saw her was when R Kelly and Jay Z's Best of Both Worlds tour fell apart and Jay was inviting other artists to perform at different cities with him. I had the worst seats imaginable but i tell you, the moment Mary opened her mouth every hair on my body stood up and i started crying. Couldn't control it. Her voice snd the power behind it is incredible.

  • NewNew

    Merlin! How tragic ?

  • Michelle Peele

Wow...thank u for your comment. I was actually a little apprehensive about going over there. I feel like I probably wouldn't have been invited while he was alive. Why go now. We'll see. Purple Rain was life changing for me. Its pretty much why I became a writer.

  • BallsJustFloppinRound

Fr fr I swear that album/song cured my life!!! Changed my ways, she’s my savior???

  • ?Patty Kakes?

I hate Janet's makup artist and I hate the hair color twice as hard. She is too beautiful to be looking like that

  • Karen Brady

Hate her nose and hated her brother's.

  • isis Osiris

    What lipstick is janelle wearing

  • Kimocha

I would freak out too if I ever met Janet in person!

  • Evillene

She did and it messed with her. I met Natalie on two occasions and she was lovely and gracious both times even though she didn't know me.

  • Rhondalousey

They're not washed up. They are legends ...shame on you ( wags finger emoji).

  • Rhondalousey

    Or the wiz, smh.

  • Chicagowise

Prince used to have after hours parties at Paisley. There used to be a Facebook page called "Paisley Park After Dark, " but I think the estate had it deleted.

The page used to contain comments from those of us who attended Prince's last concert at Paisley Park, where he spoke openly about communicating with dead loved ones through his dreams. The mood was anything but celebratory.

Prince inspired countless people in a multitude of ways. Because of him, I learned to play piano, guitar, bass, and drums. I learned how to turn my poetry into songs, but he also inspired me finish college, climb the corporate ladder, and fight for what I want.

How did the movie inspire you to become a writer?

  • Chicagowise

Yeah, she's not looking so hot. I think her last divorce left her feeling insecure and now she obsessed with her face.

  • Michelle Peele

It was More so the storyline that inspired me. He (in the movie) was someone who wanted to do music that others didn't necessarily understand. I could identify coming from a family laborers. Yet here I am desiring to dream; to do something different. I could relate to the ridicule. Long story. At any rate I do remember hearing about those parties at PP. Still debating on whether or not in will do the tour. Flew to Minneapolis last November and went to First Avenue. Took pictures, had lunch then back to Florida

  • Chicagowise

LMAO! "Mind your business!" That's my favorite line.

Like many Chicagoans, I met Oprah during a tapping of her show, when it was filmed in the WLS ABC studios at State and Lake.

The show I attended had famous ex wives on the panel. One woman was Richard Pryor's ex. I remember her, because she was openly flirting with me.

After that, I ran into Oprah on the street, many times. She used to frequent the Taco Bell and Dunkin Donuts across the street from the studio. She used to wear a beautiful purple coat with a cape.

My last encounter with Oprah was in a medical setting and that's all I can say about that.

  • Chicagowise

I believe that. He always came across as a nice person.

  • Chicagowise

When I heard the opening lines to Controversy, my fandom was turned up to 10! "Am I black or white? Am I straight or gay? Controversy!" At the time, I was a teenager struggling with racial and sexual identity issues. Before Prince, I had never heard another singer approach that subject matter so boldly.

How was your trip to First Avenue? Did you go inside or did you take pictures of the exterior?

  • Michelle Peele

My older cousin actually turned me on to Prince. I think the first song I ever heard was called Head. By the time Purple Rain came out I was a super fan of sorts. My trip was actually a day trip from FL to Minn. I took pics of the outside of First Ave. Then went around the corner and had lunch at the First Ave Tavern. There were some stairs inside of the restaurant. I was wondering if it led to the inside of the club. I have more time so maybe I will go back and see the inside. Met a super fan from Boston who sent me a link of places to visit.
