A North Carolina woman was charged with killing her husband after a funeral home discovered fatal stab wounds in his corpse that the police missed.

Toni Marsha Talley, 32, is being held on $200,000 bail at Harnett County Detention Center in Spring Lake, N.C.

Family members of 39-year-old David Lokeith Worley initially were told he died in a single car accident on July 19. But skeptical family members asked funeral home employees to give them the results of Worley’s necropsy.

Funeral home employee Vernon Peterson found the fatal stab wounds in Worley’s back and reported his findings to police, according to ABC news affiliate WTVD.

The medical examiner’s office independently confirmed the funeral home’s findings, that Worley was already stabbed when he got behind the wheel of his car. The coroner determined the injuries would have caused Worley to lose his motor skills within an hour.

According to N.C. Highway Patrol, Worley was traveling at a high rate of speed toward Spring Lake when he lost control of his vehicle and left the road. The car overturned several times and came to rest on its roof in a ditch, according to the highway patrol.

Worley, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, was thrown from the car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
