The first ever black lesbian student-president of an expensive New Jersey prep school was forced to resign after she posted a series of offensive social media photos online mocking her white classmates.
Dean of Students Nancy Thomas accepted Maya Peterson’s resignation. She told the Lawrenceville student paper that Peterson”s comments were “not fitting of a student leader.”
One of the social media images shows Peterson holding a hockey stick, while wearing L.L. Bean duck boots and a Yale sweatshirt.
Using the hashtags #romney2016, #confederate and #peakedinhighschool in the photo captions, she joked that she was representative of a typical “Lawrenceville boi.”
School administrators at the $53,000-a-year school – believed to be the most expensive in the country – called Peterson into a meeting and demanded that she resign, according to Buzzfeed.com.
Peterson was arrogant and unrepentant about the current controversy, and other racial incidents from her past.
“I understand why I hurt people’s feelings, but I didn’t become president to make sure rich white guys had more representation on campus,” she told Buzzfeed.
When Barack Obama was re-elected President in 2012, Peterson wrote on her Facebook page, “As a black and Latino, gay woman in the United States of America, today is a momentous day.”
In a comment to her classmates who accused her of being racist, Peterson wrote: “I’m sorry to all the rich white men who have failed to elect a president that endorses their greed.”
A former student named David said, “When I think of Maya Peterson, I don’t think of someone who is an avid proponent of progress or of inclusiveness… She had a hateful spirit.”
David added that Peterson’s overall attitude “violated the spirit of the Lawrenceville community.”
