Janay Rice, wife of former NFL running back Ray Rice, sat down with ESPN’s Jamele Hill to defend her husband in yet another campaign to help him get his NFL job back.
Hill made Janay’s hackles rise when she asked about people calling Ray a wife beater.
“It pisses me off,” laughed Janay. “I get angry about it because it’s the furthest things from the truth,” she added.
Ray Rice, who is currently a free agent, was booted from the Baltimore Ravens team after video leaked of him savagely punching the mother of his daughter in a casino elevator.
Last year Rice won his appeal and was eligible to play immediately, but no team will touch him.
The damning video showed the 28-year-old, 200-pound footballer punch his wife and drag her limp body from the elevator. The ensuing public outcry forced the NFL to modify its policy on domestic abuse.
But Janay insisted her husband was a saint who simply made a mistake.
“It has never happened before, and that’s not him,” said Janay. “He’s been made out to be this monster, and he’s not a wife beater. He’s someone who made a mistake. He’s human.”
Janay also denied being a gold digger.
“That’s the biggest misconception. A lot of people assume that I’m with Ray for what he can do for me. But anybody who knows me knows that I don’t need Ray. I’m with him because I love him, and he just happens to be a football player.”
