Halle Berry defended ‘The Little Mermaid’ star Halle Bailey who is still under attack by ‘Mermaid’ fans.
The Oscar-winning actress was mistaken for Bailey on Twitter. One person tweeted to Berry, “Can’t wait to see you under da sea!”
Berry snapped back “Wrong Halle lol. I can’t wait to see her too though!”
Other Twitter users confused 56-year-old Berry for Bailey, who is 22.
One person tweeted “Halle Berry is nearly 60 playing the role of a 16-year-old girl. This is what happens when you upset a fandom.”
The Little Mermaid, written by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837, is a fairy tale about a fish who dreams of being human.
Disney released its fully animated film The Little Mermaid in 1989, featuring Jodi Benson voicing Ariel, a fish who falls in love with a human prince named Eric.
Disney flipped the script for its 2023 live-action ‘Mermaid’ film by casting Bailey, a Black actress, to play the part of Ariel, who falls in love with Eric, played by a white actor.
However, the movie is being marketed to white audiences, who strongly disapprove.
Disney debuted the ‘Mermaid’ trailer on Sept. 9 on its YouTube channel.
Over 1.5 million YouTube users disliked the Disney trailer and voiced their opinions in over 200,000 comments.
YouTube previously disabled the downvote feature, but a Chrome browser extension restored the function.
