DC Comics canceled its historic gay Superman comic book series due to “abysmal” low sales.

Last year DC announced the new Superman, actually his son Jon Kent, would be bisexual and fall in love with a Twink newspaper reporter.

Former CNN prime-time anchor Don Lemon celebrated the announcement of the new gay Superman comics in his now-canceled news program.

“Let’s just be real, coming out gives all of us in the LGBTQ community our very own super power – the power to be ourselves,” said Lemon, before sharing his own coming out story.

A few days later, DC Comics employees called the police to ask for protection after receiving death threats from outraged Superman fans.

The comic book series went ahead as planned, but DC Comics is now canceling the gay Superman run due to abysmal sales, according to CBR.com.

The news broke during a Comic Con panel in New York on Monday. The publisher revealed that Jon Kent’s solo run is over and “Superman: Son of Kal-El” issue #18 will be the final comic book in the series.

According to reports, the first issue of “Son of Kal-El” sold only 68,000 comic books, while the third issue fared worse, selling only 34,000 comics.

Fans of the “Son of Kal-El” comic book series blamed “gay panic” and homophobia for the flop.
