Cop killer Tremaine Wilbourn turned himself in to Memphis police on Monday, the Huffington Post reports.
Wilbourn’s arrest ended one of the most intense manhunts in Memphis history. The 29-year-old ex-con is charged with shooting and killing Officer Sean Bolton, 33, who interrupted a drug deal along a quiet street on Saturday.
Authorities say Bolton spotted an illegally parked 2002 Mercedes-Benz and approached the vehicle on the passenger side.
Wilbourn, the passenger, got out of the car and a “brief struggle” ensued. Wilbourn allegedly shot Bolton “multiple times, killing him. The gunman and the car’s driver then fled the scene on foot.
The driver turned himself in, and was later released without charges.
Authorities say neighborhood residents used the fallen officer’s radio to report the shooting.
The residents picked Wilbourn out of a photo lineup.
“I think he felt the walls closing in and thought it would be in his best interest to turn himself in,” said Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong, who starred in crime documentary 48 Hours: Memphis.
Wilbourn was accompanied by his family and his attorney.
The cold-hearted killer spoke briefly to Armstrong: “I want you to know that one, I’m not a cold-blooded killer and two, I am not a coward,” he said.
Wilbourn was apparently offended that Armstrong used that word to describe him on the evening news the day before.
Wilbourn, who was on probation for an armed bank robbery, served 8 years in federal prison and was released on probation in July 2014.
Bolton, a Marine who served in Iraq, was the third officer to be fatally shot while on duty in 4 years.
