Ahmed Mohamed is flying high after dropping out of MacArthur High School in Irving, Texas. The 14-year-old was suspended for taking a hoax bomb/clock to school.
After going on a grand tour of the U.N. this week, Mohamed and his family will hop on a private jet to Qatar where he will be celebrated like royalty.
According to school officials in Texas, Mohamed’s discipline problems started long before he brought his fake clock to school.
The Dallas Morning News reports that Mohamed’s discipline problems earned him “weeks of suspensions” from school. The teenager was reportedly suspended for pranking classmates, disrupting classrooms and tinkering with a classroom projector.
Mohamed’s father, a Sudanese Muslim activist, refused to sign a form sent home by the school that would allow school officials to discuss Mohamed’s discipline problems with the media.
Mohamed’s school discipline record is described as “thick by some accounts.”
Police arrested Mohamed on the day after Sept. 11 when he brought a dismantled clock to school and tried to pass it off as his “invention.” Mohamed reportedly showed the “clock” to as many as 6 teachers until he found one who gave him the reaction he was looking for.
Police say Mohamed was “not forthcoming” when they asked him what his “clock” was and why he brought it to school.
But Mohamed was very forthcoming with the news media who showed up en masse outside police headquarters within minutes.
Mohamed became a cause célèbre for Muslim sympathizers like American President Barack Obama who invited the boy to bring his “cool clock” to the White House.
By the way, police in Irving, Texas are still waiting for Mohamed and his family to pick up his clock.
