Surveillance video from a gas station in Rio, Brazil shows Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte lied about being robbed at gunpoint.
The video shows Lochte and 2 other swimmers kicking in the door of a gas station bathroom.
It isn’t clear why they vandalized the door, but a gas station security guard did point a gun at the trio and order them to sit on a curb to wait for police.
Lochte, 32, twisted the details of the story by reporting that men dressed as police pulled over the cab he and his buddies were riding in and robbed them of their cash and jewels.
The video shows that the cab was idling at the gas station when at least one swimming kicked in the bathroom door.
The Brazilian police don’t take kindly to Americans besmirching their country.
According to the NY Times, the case is “testing the relations between Brazil and the United States”.
Lochte, who returned to the U.S., now faces extradition back to Rio to answer to the charges.
NY Times — The police said that they believed that the American swimmer Ryan Lochte had “stained” Rio by lying about what happened, but they acknowledged that a security guard had brandished a gun after one ore more of the swimmers vandalized a gas station bathroom.
Fernando Veloso, the Civil Police chief, said at a news conference that “there was no robbery in the way it was reported by the athletes,” and “they were not the victim of the criminal act they described.”
