Nylah Taylor, the 16-month-old baby who was brutally beaten by her father, Shaquan Taylor, has died.
The NY Daily News reports Nylah died at 10:40 a.m. Friday at Brooklyn hospital. The infant suffered multiple skull fractures, bleeding on the brain and a black eye.
The baby’s 17-year-old mother, Tammy Lewis, dropped the baby off at Taylor’s apartment on Father’s Day, after he warned her he would harm the baby.
Tammy’s aunt told police Taylor threatened to punch the baby if Tammy brought her to his apartment.
“Feel mad disrespected,” Taylor wrote in a Facebook post in February 2016 around the time Nylah was born.
“Told that lil b-tch to get abortion … she tells me she is but still keep it. Exactly why I hate that lil b-tch,” he wrote in another post.
Taylor, who turned 19 in jail on Tuesday, tearfully denied beating his daughter.
“She’s my first daughter, she’s my blood. Why would I hit her?” he told the News. He said the infant fell off the bed after he’d given her medicine.
But doctors determined Nylah’s head injuries were not the result of a fall from a bed.
The troubled teen is expecting another baby — a boy — by a different woman.
His charges will be upgraded to murder from felony assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child younger than 17.
“We will seek to upgrade the charges in the grand jury,” a spokeswoman for the Brooklyn district attorney told the News.
Taylor is also charged with assaulting Tammy after she found Nylah bruised and in respiratory distress in his apartment. “Her I hit. I admit that,” he said. “That’s a fact.”
“He took my baby from me,” wrote Tammy in a Facebook post Friday morning. “She’s gone.”
