A brave paramedic disarmed a Tennessee police officer who suffered a nervous breakdown after firing his service weapon 7 times while attempting to apprehend two suspects in December 2016.
Video from Deputy Justin Johnson’s body cam shows the officer pursuing Brian Keith Mullinax, 41, and his girlfriend, Tina Carrie Jo Cody, 37 through a field.
Johnson grabbed Cody by her blouse and threw her to the ground with the help of 2 paramedics who were on the scene.
About 5 minutes later, Johnson snapped and began wildly firing 7 shots into a nearby trailer park while the paramedics restrained the woman on the ground.
After making a frantic “shots fired” radio call to dispatch, Johnson began hyperventilating and crying as he ran toward the road.
“I’VE GOT A GUY WITH A GUN! GIVE ME SOME HELP! SHOTS FIRED!” Johnson shouted via his radio.
But Mullinax was not armed and Cody was already on the ground.
The other paramedic bravely approached Johnson and tried to calm him down. “Pull it together man!” the medic said repeatedly while grabbing the frantic cop’s hand.
Johnson was hyperventilating so hard that one of his eye contacts popped out, according to the Daily Mail UK.
“Look at me! Give me that gun! Give me your gun! Give me your gun, sir!” the medic told Johnson before disarming him.
The medic then pointed the gun at Mullinax who is in the nearby trailer park (not visible in the video).
“Don’t move!” he yelled at Mullinax, while alternately telling the panicked Johnson, “I’ve got your back. Don’t worry!”
According to The Mail, Jonson never documented his breakdown in a Sheriff’s Office incident report. He said Mullinax had a gun and he feared for his life. But Mullinax was not armed.
Mullinax is set to stand trial on Tuesday for “assaulting” Johnson.
According to The Mail, the couple spent 42 days in jail because they were too poor to post bond.
Johnson is still on active duty with the police force.
It is not clear if Johnson was ever required to undergo a psychological exam or seek help for his mental breakdown.
